best state forest for camping?

so me and 5 other mates wanna go camping in one of the state forests in Victoria, mates got a 4x4 jeep and i would like it to be around or less that 2 hours from the city.
we just want to somewhere we wont see anyone else, so we dont want to go to a camp ground. any suggestions? thanks.

Best for camping, less than two hours from the city and no-one else around ... you can have two of those things but not all three.

Google the following and see what you think: Keppels Hut or Marysville State forest Murrindindi Scenic reserve (near Toolangi), Big River State forest, Rubicon State forest. Mt Cole State Forest, wombat state forest.

As Earwig said, choose any two and don't count on the results. If you can drive there so can anyone else.

With a 4 WD you can get to some places that I have yet to visit. They are in the Mt. Blue Rag /North Razorback/ Mulhauser spur Alpine areas. All are Definitely 5 hours drive from Melb.
Ultimately if you want to get away from other people you may have to hike into an area where even a 4 x 4 vehicle cannot go.
I did not see anybody at all in May 2016 hiking up the 8 mile Spur from the Howqua river to the summit of the Bluff. I would steer clear of that route until the heat of summer abates.
Keppel's hut is open to 4 x 4 access in summer so that is not going to be remote the way it is in white season.However if you each haul 7 litres of water from Kepell's hut up to the Boundary Hut ruins at Lake Mountain , on foot, plus your packs with the usual gear , and camp near there, I doubt you will see many people at all.See my trip report on this forum about this walk.

If you like yobos and log trucks. The Rubicon State Forest has been hammered by logging, 4WD's and trail bikes. It's unlikely any map is worth anything after what has been done up there.

That may well be true but if you carry water into the Barnewall plains picnic area then that spot is peaceful and you have the Mt. Torbreck walk right at your campsite.
Overall it is true that if you can drive there then so can yobbos and other inconsiderate noisy people who will ruin the serenity.
