With a 4 WD you can get to some places that I have yet to visit. They are in the Mt. Blue Rag /North Razorback/ Mulhauser spur Alpine areas. All are Definitely 5 hours drive from Melb.
Ultimately if you want to get away from other people you may have to hike into an area where even a 4 x 4 vehicle cannot go.
I did not see anybody at all in May 2016 hiking up the 8 mile Spur from the Howqua river to the summit of the Bluff. I would steer clear of that route until the heat of summer abates.
Keppel's hut is open to 4 x 4 access in summer so that is not going to be remote the way it is in white season. However if you each haul 7 litres of water from Kepell's hut up to the Boundary Hut ruins at Lake Mountain , on foot, plus your packs with the usual gear , and camp near there, I doubt you will see many people at all.See my trip report on this forum about this walk.
