Buller Howitt Area- Water Report

Postby Rlgm12 » Sat 14 Jan, 2017 10:40 am

Just returned from a Bluff-Howitt-Buller Bushwalk.
Figured the following information would be helpful.

Plenty of water at hellfire creek and I imagine it will persist.

Plenty of water flowing from secondary creeks you'd not expect, will dry out soon enough.
(Along the bluff towards Mt Howitt)

Loads of water coming out of Camp Creek near Mt spec.
Needs filtering as we smelt what seemed like a dead animal up the slope.

Water can be found along the mt spec cobbler southern slopes feeding into the king river, readily.
Will drain out quickly tho.

Delatite river is feasible up to howqua gap Hut.

Bluff Hut tank is full. (8th of Jan)

Howqua gap hut's tanks are full (13th of Jan)

GGS Hut has some water. (12th of Jan)

(Beware of cow dung in the king river, counted over 30 near king Hut)

Mac springs was flowing quite well but still was a bit fowl.

The recent rains blessed my 7day bushwalk with plenty of water. Hopefully the rain stays constant for the rest of summer, making this area suitable for plenty of bushwalkers.

Have just finished Buller-Howqua-Bluff-Cross-Cut Saw - Speculation - Stirling - Buller loop walk (7 days).

Update re the water situation:

Water at Bluff Hut tank (24th Jan).

Plenty of water at hellfire creek (25th Jan).

Mac springs was flowing well (25th Jan).

Camp Creek near Mt spec still running fine (26th Jan).

Still water coming down from mt spec cobbler southern slopes (26th Jan).

Water in GGS hut and howqua gap Hut tanks (27th Jan).

Water at Craigs Hut (however only from tap in toilets).

Hot weather during our 7 day bushwalk - some rain on night of 23rd. That seemed to be enough to keep tanks full/streams flowing.
