Hikes/walks where dogs are allowed in Victoria.

Mon 23 Jan, 2017 7:34 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows of some good walks/hikes in Victoria where dogs are allowed?
The only one I've found (which is a great walk, but short) is from the saddle to the summit of Mt Timbertop. Yes I doubled checked with DEPI and the local authority and as long as you don't go past the summit its state forest. The East side heading towards Mt Buller becomes NP or Resort Park and dogs are not allowed. Dogs are allowed on leash in the Sheepyard Flats camping areas but not on any of the walks that head upwards.
I also know the Strathbogies has lots of trails/4wd tracks, but not much chop for interesting hiking. More Mountain biking, motorbiking and 4wding.

Look forward to hearing anyones suggestions.

Most of the Goldfileds track from Buninyong to Bendigo is dog friendly. Lerderderg north of O'Briens Crossing (dogs are not permitted in the conservation zone) to Blackwood, Mt Cole State Forest (Beeripmo walk) or the You Yangs.

The Mt. Torbreck summit walk ( steep ) and the Rubicon aquaduct /tramway walks are in state park/s in the Rubicon area. Dogs are permitted there.

Torbreck and Rubicon are in State forest - not State park - and so dogs are allowed. State parks are different to State Forest and dogs generally aren't allowed in State parks.

Sheep yard Flat is in the State Forest...or is it state park?

If it is state forest (pretty sure it is), then yes, you can have a dog there.
Keep in mind sheep yard flat is the very first campsite on the left after crossing the Howqua river.
I think the next one along is also in the state forest.

Any flats after that I believe enter a no dog zone aka national park.

Keep in mind this is assuming its state forest.

Sheepyard Flats, according to the DEPI who then put me onto the local parks authority in Mansfield, Sheepyard flat was OK for dogs, but only in the Howqua Historic area. As soon as you leave there you are in National Park or the Resort park and dogs are not permitted. So in other words you can camp there with a dog (as long as on a lead) but can't take them on any hikes or further on.
Hope that makes sense.

Yep. That's all within the Howqua Hills Historic Area.

As a general rule (and like all rules, there will be exceptions):

National and State Parks, Alpine Resorts, flora and fauna reserves, wildlife reserves etc = no dogs
State forest and Historic areas = dogs allowed
Scenic reserves = yes, wait, hang on, No. Ahh, maybe! Depends. Mt Beckworth is okay for dogs but Murrindindi isn't.
