The Flinders_The Victorian Peak Bagging List

Postby jvangemert » Sat 25 Feb, 2017 8:02 pm

Bushwalkers, why don't we have a peak bagging list for Victoria.
So I have cobbled this one together in a spreadsheet using Wiki and other bush/ski forums posts plus a quick check of named high points on the map.
After a couple of glasses of red I awarded points.
I sat back and after sending to a couple of mates revised it quite a bit. The PDF version is here on this page. The excel spreadsheet you can alter by area, by height, by name etc. I made a separate list for the Grampians with a cut off of 500m. Why? Because they are the most wonderful set of craggy peaks in Victoria and I visited all of them and they are in the spirit of the Ables and the Munros (if perhaps a little shorter).
This will undoubtedly fire up campfire discussions which is fine and everyone will have a take on it. The main thing is we have a starting point.

The must have rules are:
1. A view e.g. cannot be a treed hill a' la' Mt Cowley in the Otways or be so compromised by road and transmission towers a' la' Mt William in the Grampians.
2. 150m vertical separation from surroundings as a min.
3. A min height. I made it around 1000m for Victoria. I have made a separate list for the Grampians with a cut off at 500m.
4. Points are awarded for the prominence, the effort to get there and the notoriety. This is based on the Ables for which only one peak gets a perfect 10. Federation probably because the climb can kill you. 6 is the highest I've awarded and our mountains are nowhere near as hard to get and climb as those in Tassie.

The formatting is gone and the website doesn't like cells of any kind.

Nice work jvangemert

Do you want to add the Cathedral Range?
Neds Peak 725 - has a view if you look really hard.
North Jawbone 795
South Jawbone 804
Sugarloaf Peak 912

Altitudes taken from OSM.

Do you only count the peak once?
If so I'm only on a paltry 76 - just an apprentice

I don't intend to nitpick with individual ratings, but there is a broader issue that I will call "local prominence" that perhaps should be added to the rules.

I'll take one example from the top of your list. Mt Bogong clearly deserves its rating as a 6. But once you have got to the summit of Bogong, West Peak can be bagged with little extra effort, and is probably only worth a 4. Mt Feathertop and Little Mount Feathertop would be similar. Notoriety probably also justifies a downgrade in ratings for subsidiary summits. Generally maximum ratings should only be awarded to the higher of adjacent peaks, although there could be grounds for award a lower peak a higher rating if it is more dramatic, harder to climb, etc.

Thoughts?

The Cathedral Range does have some great crags but comes under the 1000m. Then so does a lot of Grampians peaks. I hived off the Grampians as a separate list as it is a wonderful and deserving walking area.
West Peak, 6 points, looks more like a peak, is more dramatic both from the valley view and while on the Bogong massif and has better views IMO. The much loved Mt Bogong, 5 points, needs to have an enormous cairn to delineate its location.
The formatting of this list is a problem when copied here but it clearer on my excel which you can search/tally etc.
If you PM me with an email address I can send it too you.

This is not so much a Vic Peak-Baggers list, but more like Victorian Abels only not quite so high. There are plenty of peaks on the Tassie Peak-Baggers List below 1000m, or without views, or containing fire towers/communication towers/helipads etc.
Nice list, but. 192 points - Must get back and bump that up to 200.

Some routes up Mt . Bogong and Mt. FT are tougher than others. Ascending Mt.Bogong by the T Spur versus the Staircase or the Eskdale spurs should have different ratings. The same can be said about The Dimantina spur versus the Bungalow spur or the Bon Accord spur etc.

If this was less like an Abels list and more like a basic 'peak-bagging' list, I would recommend some additions.

Mount Buangor 965m
Langi Ghiran 924m
Ben Nevis 863m

They are not far from the Grampians, could they potentially be added to that list?
