Water at Mt Feathertop

Postby PedroArvy » Mon 06 Mar, 2017 7:30 am

I am camping at Federation Hut on the Labor day weekend and was wondering if I'd find water up there. Could anyone supply information on that?

The tank may have water. It depends on recent precipitation and the number of visitors. There is nearly always water on Bungalow Spur in several places, notably at the Bungalow Hut Site. A better place for many is on the Tom Kneen Track, maybe 10 minutes from the junction of the summit track. This water is better as it's only a short way from the summit track and downhill to Federation Hut. Also - and I have not checked this for years - the Tom Kneen Track was is often flowing stronger than the Bungalow Hut Site creek. If climbing the Bungalow Spur, there's a major creek about 30 minutes up from the bottom, then a soak just above Tobias Gap, and then the Bungalow Hut Site. I may stop at the first two and never at the last one.

If coming any other way, try the Tom Kneen Track creek.

I too am going to Mt Feathertop with some others for the coming Labor Day weekend.
There is (was??) a reliable spring just 500m from the Summit junction along the North West Spur Track toward the MUMC Hut. It's been some years since I was up there. Does the spring still exist? Is it currently running?

The NW Spur track is now called the Tom Kneen Track. Even in a dry summer the spring is running. From memory I've never had to go into the gully, as there's water a short way before this. I would not like to cite the distance, but 500 metres is about right. My map shows a spring before the gully. The Bungalow Hut SIte water is about 1500 metres down the track and about 270 metres lower. The Tom Kneen Track is virtually flat from the summit track junction to the water. No contest - use the Tom Kneen Track water.

Hi guys
Camping at Federation hut now and can definitely confirm the tank has water and the creek just below the hut on Bungalow spur is running.
Perfect night up here, hope it continues for the long weekend.

Sounds like it will be a party up there this Saturday night!
I will have scotch whisky on hand and will be smoking a Cuban cigar.

Hello All,

Heading up to Mt Feathertop this weekend and most likely overnighting at Federation Hut.

Has anyone been there recently and knows what the situation is like for water? Is there anything in the tanks? What about other water sources.

I'd rather have to avoid carrying in all my water so any info would be appreciated.

Cheers,

KO

If you are desperate then there is a spring down Bungalow spur which should still be running. It is not close but not too far. Can't say a distance for sure as it has been a while since I went that way. There has been some recent rain in the area but not a great deal. More rain coming this weekend but mostly on Sunday.

The springs at the Bungalow Hut site and on the Tom Kneen Track should both be running. See the above posts for details.
