Kid friendly car camping day hikes (Grampians)

Postby drakkar » Mon 22 May, 2017 8:19 pm

Ok. So my almost 7 year old daughter Is ready to be taken on some bigger adventures (I'm ready to take her maybe?)

Anyway, I don't have gear for her yet, but we can car camp comfortably. Everywhere other than above the tree line.

I had Grampians in mind due to us having aboriginal heritage, but I've got no idea where much of the art is hidden. She also has an interest in climbing.

Can anyone point me towards any good spots that have 2hour walking round trip from an art site or other magical place that I can spin a story about fairies and see the wonder in her eyes? Can be 4wd only. I'm asking to minimise time spent on google hoping to luck upon a place.

Buandik campground might be ok, very close to two rock art sites, and you could walk up to The Fortress as a there-and-back instead of doing the loop walk. It would be quite easy to conjure up fairies in the rock overhangs and campsites up near The Fortress! You could also do the Chimney Pots walk as a starter, it's not very long (5km-ish return?) and has a little bit of climbing with nice views at the top

There is apparently some rock art near Mt Langi Ghiran as well, and loads of day walks in that area, as well as campgrounds. Mentioned in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=9558&p=127002&hilit=mt+cole+aboriginal#p127002

Edit: haven't been there yet, but Mt Arapiles might be worth a look.
