Lake Tali Karng, Victoria.

We were there over Sunday and Monday (also arriving at the lake during the rain...no one in Melbourne believes me when I say we got rained it, it was mid 30s in town). Lake was really quiet, maybe 4 other groups there? Didn't see anyone on Monday.

Oh and I didn't have a chainsaw with me, so if you cleared some trees for me, thank you!

According to the CFA website today 3/2/2014, Lake Tali Karng and surrounding areas are closed until the end of March.

The following roads and tracks will be closed from January 20 to March 31 2014:
B1 Track from Tamboritha Road to Chromite Track
B2 Track from Tamboritha Road to B2 Track
Chromite Track from B1 Track to Brandy Pinch Track
Riggall Spur Track from Brandy Pinch Track to Millers Track
Mt Wellington Track from Moroka Road for the entire length
McFarlane Road from Moroka Road for the entire length
Dry Hill Track from Moroka Road to McFarlane Road
B2 Track from Tamboritha Road for entire length
Lake Tarli Karng walking Track network

I was all set to go up there this weekend till I read your post, so I rang parks at heyfield and was told all the tali walks are shut down as well as mcmillans. Certainly saved me going up there for nothing, well its saved me a drive from licola to mansfield anyway cause thats what I probably would have done to not waste the weekend.

Which websites did you browse to find this info dplanet? I was thinking of going to Tali Karng on the Labor Day weekend. Closing the area until the end of March seems a bit extreme. Looking on the CFA website I can't see anything saying that the area is closed now but Parks Vic website says it is closed.

Due to the recent Tamboritha-Carey River fire a Public Safety Zone has been declared. People are not permitted to enter or remain in a Public Safety Zone while it is current. View map of Public Safety Zone. It is expected that all sections of the park surrounding the fire will re-open as of 1 March 2014.

Lake tali karng walk is now open which is good, have made other arrangements for this long weekend which is bad! Hopefully get back up there soon as I so miss the place. I haven't been back there in awhile

Yeah if thats all that you want to do. But i was thinking of leaving from mc farlane saddle, I thought I'd traverse up mt wellington then go up spion kopje set up camp at millars hut maybe then walk to the Sentinels and back to camp first day. Short walk to tali camp and explore all around the lake and bump out the next day.

If the weather isnt as nice I'll just walk it in two days.

I just went up there last weekend over the Labour day weekend. It is a brilliant place. I want to go back on the first weekend in April 2014.I like the base camp with the dunny and the water tank plan . Going down and back up the Gillio's track without a full pack would be much easier.

I just tried to do that base camp at Nyimba campsite plan this w/end ( April 5th 2014 ). The weather was A T R O C I O U S L Y bad. I walked from Macfarlane saddle in steady rain, fog and single digit temperatures across the Wellington high plains. I ate some lunch at the campsite as said Eff it, I am hating this, it was too wet to sit and cook something and there was no chance getting warm by lighting a fire b/c the wood was all wet and couldn't see anything special because the fog was so thick .I pulled the pin and hiked straight back out to the car. What a relief to get away . The Moroka road was not in good shape with all the rain either and visibility was very poor.

I agree, NNW – nothing quite like camping on Mt Feathertop or Mt Speculation surrounded by a thunderstorm – howling wind, lashing rain and lightning crashing all around …… helps if you’re in a decent tent !

Hey, Just wondering if anyone had any up to date info on lake and surrounding areas. How high the lake is at the moment? whether its possible to camp on the lake shore? How deep/fast flowing the wellington river is at the moment and whether the Wellington river track wouldn't be too hard going with the many crossings.
Thinking of spending Tuesday/Wednesday night out this way. Will post back regardless with an update on conditions etc..

At this time of the year the Wellington should be high but passable.
You can have a look at the river levels, the closest gauge is at Licola, where the Wellington joins the MaCallister.

If it rains it'll come up and the crossing will be extra fun dangerous.

I'd say the lake will be high but not over the high part of the campsite. I think it only really flood the campsite shortly after bigger rains, then goes back down to the unvegetated lip.

Will be there in a few weeks time fishing the area at Licola, Northern parts of all the camp sites scatted along the Wellington river and southly on the MaCalister river winding through beautiful country site all the way down into the Glenmaggie Reservoir, Glenmaggie, Victoria

Last I was there the water level for the MaCalister river was down to the rivers bed. Will be interesting fishing it with the newly flushed river stream.

Where did you find this? I couldn't find any river gauges on the Wellington river at all; the closest was the Macallister at Licola.
Even DPI doesn't have any other on their map yet.

Was there on the weekend. River was easily crossable, the Plains above tali had snow on them though this should be mostly gone now with the hot temps. Didn't drop into the Lake, though four weeks ago it was low so should be no problems camping there.
Lots of wild flowers around and the place was looking beautiful, enjoy.

Don't be fooled at a drop of a hat if the weather turns foul and the heavens open up that place floods rapidly with all the water catchments from the hills.

I would love the Wellington River to be flowing well as the rainbow and brown trout would of have done their business of spawning but you get the two species still hanging around in the river system feeding on what ever comes down their path, specially the males.
