Day hike with toddler and dog between Chrissy and New Year

Postby nezumi » Tue 26 Dec, 2017 8:06 am

Can anyone suggest a good day hike/picnic and hike route to go on this week?

I got myself a framed kiddy carrier for Christmas, so I can take Mr 21 months on a hike. There will be four adults, one toddler and one dog. Current suggestion is Lerderderg Gorge, but I am open to other options. I haven't *properly* fit the pack to me or my wife yet, so this will be as much a test run as anything.

I think a max of about 4 hours walking and preferably somewhere cool, given the predicted temps this week. We are possibly looking to go on Saturday, but if we can make it earlier, that would be awesome too.

Try the Lederderg Heritage Trail and the Whipstick walk from the Garden of St Erith, should be cooler than the gorge itself.

Also the You Yangs is a lovely day stroll and plenty if dogs there( on lease)

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion! We ended up doing the Lerderderg River Heritage Walk today and it was great. The track was a little overgrown and the weather wasn't entirely friendly (we had drizzling mist for most of the walk, with some actual rain a couple of times) but otherwise, we had fun. My toddler did a bit of slow walking, inspecting things all along the way, but spent most of the time in the kiddy carrier, enjoying the view (and his snacks).

If you are not based in Melb. then the day walk up from Tallangatta ski club hut to the summit hut at Mt. Wills is well worth the effort.
