The Fortress, Grampians - Actually Getting to the Top?

Postby Explorer_Sam » Sun 14 Jan, 2018 5:58 pm

I've heard that you can bushwalk to the top of the Fortress but it's very hard to find any information about it online. Has anyone here done it? Any tips or hints?

This might help Sam. https://www.trailhiking.com.au/fortress/
Switch the map view (which seems to default to OCM) to satellite for a better idea of what is involved.

I would not call it a hike to the top. There may be other routes but the route we took was a bit of a climb and scramble with exposure. Not being a rock climber it was a tad scary. The hardest part is finding the way up the first level about five metres high We climbed up a crack. Then it involved searching for a route, some easy waking and some ledges with exposure. There were very good hand holds. There are cairns on all the surrounding rocky pillars that look like apartment blocks. There are incredibly hard rock climber routes too. The advice to not attempt it in the wet is wise: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=20326&p=271491&hilit=fortress+grampians#p271491
