Great Ocean Walk

Postby Michaelpav57 » Wed 21 Feb, 2018 9:52 am

We will be walking the GOW in April but are struggling with logistics. We are from Queensland and can save a lot of time and money if we can get our hire car to the 12 Apostles Carpark from Apollo Bay where our walk begins. Alternatively one of us can drive the car to 12 Apostles if we can work out how to get back to Apollo Bay.

Any ideas???

There is a Public Transport Victoria bus departing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10:40.

That’s exactly what I plan on doing very soon but leaving a car at princetown. Seems to be the easiest solution

If the bus doesn't suit, try contacting GOR Shuttle for a quote:
Abby Usas (Mr)
GOR Shuttle
03 523 79 278
0428 379 278
GOR Shuttle <gorshuttle@bordernet.com.au>

Not cheap but depends how many are in your group. You may also be able to tie in with an existing booking.

Used the bus on the weekend and it was trouble free.

Wish the walk was as trouble free

Leaving your car at the Princetown Reserve for a nominal fee (give them a call to check, but I think it was around $5 / night) - and then catching the bus back to Apollo Bay is a good way to go - double-check the timetable. I was skipping sites so decided to stay a night in Apollo Bay before setting off.
You can then leave your main packs at your car in Princetown before finishing the walk - bear in mind it adds several kms to that last day though as you'll need to double back from the 12 Apostles to Princetown Reserve to get to your car again.
Such a beautiful walk - aim for an early start on the penultimate leg to get to Devil's Kitchen early and choose your campsite - no. 8 is a beauty!

Problems????

I’ve got a shoulder injury that wasn’t quite up to a heavy pack yet.

Stayed at blanket bay the first night with moderate pain and felt pretty good the next morning so continued on.

Really struggled with the pain as I approached Cape Otway and the heat wasn’t helping my enthusiasm.

Eventually called it quits and walked back to the lighthouse where I grabbed a ride with the nearest tourist.

The guy at the park even refunded my money for unused nights so not all bad.

I’ll be back soonish with a different plan of attack.
