Water near The Nobs/Mt McDonald

Postby Drew » Sun 01 Apr, 2018 10:28 am

Just on the off chance anyone can help today:

We're currently heading along the AAWT heading west from My Clear. Plan was to camp tonight at intersection of AAWT and Nobs Track, then descend Nobs track tomorrow down to our car on Brock's Rd.

I was hoping to find water at a spring near the summit of Mt Clear but couldn't find a drop. We have enough for today but I'm now a bit nervous about water for tonight. I believe that heading down Nobs Track (sth/west) there will be water eventually. If anyone can tell me how reliable this water is (or any other sources along the way) we'd greatly appreciate it. Otherwise we might have a long, thirsty walk to the car today.

I thought that after 50mm plus up here last weekend it would be fine but it's still super dry up here.

Thanks!

Hi Drew,

You probably don't want to hear it but I'd probably drop down Nobs Track towards Brocks Road tonight to get some water. You are right in that if you head down Nobs Track far enough, as it heads south west beneath Mt MacDonald then you will eventually pick up some water, but it will be a long walk in the wrong direction. When I went through in early spring last year I had to descend about 20 minutes from the Mt MacDonald turnoff to pick up a trickle, and that would be well and truly dry by now, so you'll be going further down I would of thought.

Nobs Track down to Brocks Road is super steep but fairly quick and it's easy enough to do it in fading light if you run out of daylight.

Good luck and stay safe :D

Thanks a lot for the reply Kev. I saw your reply as we were resting just below The Nobs. By then we had under a litre of water left (plus a little wine and port!) and had pretty much decided to come down to the valley unless there was a reply telling us about a very definite water supply.

I'd spent about an hour finding water (successfully) below Mt Clear the afternoon before and didn't really feel like spending ages going looking again.

The descent down Nobs Track was insanely steep (we saw two 4WDs ascending which was quite impressive - it looked impossible to me) but we made it down to a nice, empty campsite by the creek with plenty of daylight left. Then only a short stroll back to the car this morning.

It was lovely walking between Mt Clear and The Nobs. I'll have to return for McDonald another time - perhaps in spring!

I will walk that whole section of the AAWT in Nov./Dec. 2018. Finding water then should be easy.
