Snow hike to Mount Speculation?

Postby nihil » Wed 22 Aug, 2018 5:21 pm

Hi All,

I am looking for advice on how to go about this hike. I know it's not possible to drive in to the usual camp grounds where people often start at.

Any advice (or better hikes perhaps in the same vein) much appreciated.

Your only option, imo, is to (4wd) drive up to Lake Cobbler. You could then (depending on conditions) walk / sno-shoe / ski up the road to Camp Creek and then up to Mt Spec.

This is a serious undertaking - you need appropriate skills. I would advise not doing it solo.

Hi Bernie,

Thanks for that info. I see that Mt Buller is roughly as close as Lake Cobbler - would it be as-quick to walk from there?

There is a lot of major up and down between Mt Buller and Mt Speculation, whereas Lake Cobbler to Mt Speculation just follows a ridge.

Spec road to Camp Creek will for the most part be barren of snow unless you have a good dump (aspect and altitude). You can head up to Mt. Koonika and across to Spec also which cuts off a fair bit of the road but you will have more snow. As the captain said. Forget a Buller approach. If you are not familiar with the area then it may be better to wait until summer to check out the winter options.
