Aerial cull of Deer - Areas of ANP to be closed

Postby Xplora » Wed 12 Sep, 2018 7:09 am

For information

The trial will occur over a 3-4 day period on weekdays between the 8th and 26th of October, avoiding key visitation periods. The exact dates will be weather dependent.

The program will be targeting Sambar, Red and Fallow deer in the following locations:

Alpine National Park – Mt Pinnibar area
Alpine National Park – Mt Feathertop area
Mt Buffalo National Park – west of the Mount Buffalo Road (away from the main visitor areas)
These areas will be closed to visitors for the 3-4 days that shooting occurs to ensure the safe implementation of the deer aerial shooting operations.

It is only a trial (because all aspects of control have to be canvassed) and those involved already know the outcome. Someone higher up made the call. The actual ground shooting trial has finished and the data is being analysed but ground shooting will continue over summer until the results are in. There is also a capture program running with the view of tagging deer to see their range. Not sure how that is running but it only started about 6 weeks ago. The first two weeks scored zero and they tried another area.
