Baw Baw Snow?

Postby butter-nuts » Tue 08 Oct, 2019 9:07 am

Hi All,

I was hoping to go for a walk around mushroom rocks to baw baw this weekend. Just wondering if I need to take snowshoes or not (I can see the forecast is predicting some light snow).

The last snow reports I can find are 22 Sep for Mt St Gwinear and 30 Sep for Baw Baw village. There are Mt Baw Baw snow cameras at https://www.ski.com.au/snowcams/austral ... index.html

There has been some snow this morning, but it has been falling onto a heavily reduced base. I would keep an eye one things over the week, but wouldn't expect to need snowshoes.

We walked without snowshoes from St Gwinear to Mt Bawbaw last weekend and far more snow than we expected...took 30% longer than normal (so 6hrs instead of 4 hrs)...snow in some places was still 1 metre deep and quite a bit of pot-holing, some was still skiable! Walkable without shoe-shoes, but we wished we had taken them, it will be slower than you expect! But was a great walk in those conditions!

Thanks again mate! One question, if I am parking at the Mt Erica car park will I need snow chains to get there? From what I can see on the Baw Baw and Parks Vic websites it is no longer mandatory to carry chains (as the official snow season is over)?

The signs stating that chains are required to be carried were still up last weekend (no idea when they come down) but you won't require chains to get to Erica Car Park.

There was a good XC skiable snow fall on 8/10/19 on the Baw Baw Plateau above 1300 M.. That is now melting so water is flowing well up there.
