Bushwalking gear is expensive, but it lasts a long time. My Lowe pack was bought in late 1983. My Petzl head torches have lasted about 10 years, and I expect the Black Diamond torch bought a year ago to last a long time too. A while ago I worked out that on weekend bushwalks I have $3-4000 in gear, which is a lot of money. However, if it lasts for 10-40 years then the cost per trip is peanuts, under $5 a day from memory. If you are thinking seriously about taking up bushwalking then buy slowly and wisely. If you are unsure, make do with something else, and avoid places with potentially poor weather. That is why you spend the money and get the right gear.

I agree with everything you wrote.
It's all logical.

But, as an intro to Alpine stuff, I wouldn't go out and buy expensive. Suffering a cold-night, but being perfectly safe, is type 2 fun in the end.

TBH, I wouldn't recommend anyone buy a dedicated alpine winter bag unless they intend to do a lot of snow camping. If you only intend to walk in the green season it is overkill.

I always take my Negative 9 rated duck down sleeping bag.
Last October at Roper's hut it was minus 6 . It was bleeding cold for late October.
