Peak bagging in Victoria

Mon 28 Feb, 2011 10:02 pm

Is anyone aware of a peak bagging list for Victoria, similar to the one(s) used by our Tasmanian brethren? Would be good to put some goals together around the attainment of points/peaks.

The only other lists that I know of are the State 8 and Australias Top 10. I'm not aware of any lists specifically for Victoria. :(
I use Tyrone Thomas's book Australian Mountains, The Best 100 Walks. Unfortunately it misses out on a lot of quality Victorian walks. It also is just a tick list and does not have a point value system like the Tassie list.

:idea: My top 10 Victorian Peaks that I have done would be;
Bogong
Feathertop
Howitt
Speculation
William
Stapylton
The Fortress
Buangor
Langi Ghiran
Ben Nevis

IMHO I'd rate Bogong the toughest in Victoria, others may not agree with that though. My list also leans to the west of the state because of my own location.

Found this list on Bonzle.com of the highest 50 mountains in Victoria. Also has lists for the other states too.

Well, I am just getting into this game, but I have to admit that my peak count off this list is ... 1

...but on the plus side, I have a whole lot of fun trips to plan & do! :D

Tasmanian author Bill Wilkinson of "The Abels" fame, compiled a mainland version titled "Tables of Australian Mountains - A State by State Guide". Similar rules to The Abels apply to qualify as a mountain, such as minimum drop on all sides, etc. It provides simple lists for different geographic regions giving name, height, rank and grid reference. I stumbled onto a copy of it ages ago at a book sale but it may still be generally available:

A quick note to confirm that 'Tables of Australian Mountains' is still available from Regal Press for around $10. I got a copy - the lists in it are extensive.
