Advice on remote backpacks

Postby Meagaidh » Thu 24 Nov, 2016 8:34 am

Hi visiting Queensland next June and looking for suggestions of a four or five day backpack somewhere remote. From Scotland, lots of back packing experience including here in Scotland, various parts of Europe, Ontario, NZ and in Australia WA and Tas, so comfortable in the backcountry and want to get away from the crowds. Had Hinchinbrook suggested but seems very managed and expecting busy. Any thoughts or suggestion welcome and thanks in advance. Cheers

Off track...fairly remote.
The Main Range Traverse in S.E. Qld has lots of options.Through walked or can be done in bite sized sections.
Cunningham Gap/Spicers Peak to Teviot Gap is worth considering. Side trips to the
Lincoln Bomber wreck or Mt Bangalore & falls.
Teviot Gap to Boonah gate via Spicers Peak...falls side trip.
or extend again Boonah Gate to Collins Gate..Mt Clunie onwards, side trips to falls , Mt Barney, Mt Ernest etc etc
More info here, in google, plus in the bowls of this forum.

Other walks...plenty of make your own walks, inland, exploring gorges, springs in remote N.Ps.
Goanna, Yabby & Wallaroo country. Isla NP, Expedition NP, Minerva Hills NP, Precipice NP...spring to mind.
Remote & you need to be very self sufficient.

Might be of interest...

Coastal walk & maybe a bit too south for you..sand,sea eagles, emu's & river crossings to negotiate.

Others will give you their 2 bob's worth.
Enjoy your walk, wherever it leads you.

North QLD

Juwun walk - Herbert River Gorge, west of Ingham. 4 to 5 days, remote, not many people do it. No real tracks, just follow the river mainly. And I would do the start different to the NPSR published route and start by going down the ridge line to junction of Blencoe Creek and Herbert River, that way can explore lower part of Blencoe Falls. Can make it a longer walk by going upstream Herbert River from junction of Blencoe Creek as well. But June might be too early to do it, need river to be at lower levels for safe crossings. There are large crocs in this river !

Hinchinbrook - if you want remote try Mt Bowen. Limited permits. Not many make it up there.

If the guys re-open the Mt Halifax to Paluma track by June, you could try a Rollingstone - Mt Halifax - Paluma - Jourama Falls hike. That would be 4 to 6 days depending on route variables. Day one would be tough with large pack - 1,100 metre steep climb.

Carnarvon Great Walk can be done in five days although is usually a six day walk. Definitely remote. Amazingly beautiful at that time of year.
