Fraser Island - Transport to/from Great Walk

Postby Dmo » Thu 16 Mar, 2017 2:19 pm

I'm going to be doing the Fraser Island Great Walk later this year (when the track is open!) from Dilli Village to Happy Valley. We will be driving up from Brisbane in a 2WD. I would appreciate feedback regarding the best transport options to and from the walk (ferries, barges, island taxis etc), where it's best to leave our car, and is it easier to stay in Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach before and after the walk. Thanks!!

I've not previously done this walk but also planning it for later in the year 22-28th July. The plan as it currently stands....
Drive up to Rainbow Beach on the Friday night, stay overnight in the motel there and leave the car at the motel for the week (walk notes indicate this is possible, but still to follow up directly with the motel)
Next morning 15min taxi to the ferry at Inskip point. Then walk up the Hook Pt to Dili Village access track. This does add an additional 25km on the the walk.
Once we complete the walk (still unsure whether will walk to Happy Valley, or possibly to Happy Valley and back to Eurong) will either use the on island taxi to get back to Hook Pt, or hitch.
From Hook Pt, ferry and taxi back to the car at Rainbow Beach.

We walked the Fraser Island Great Walk last October (8 of us). We parked two cars where the bitumen ends at Inskip Point (there are heaps of parks there), then walked the last few hundred metres to the barge. 4wd taxi was prebooked to pick us up near where the barge lands on Fraser Island (Hook point) & we booked taxi to take us back when we finished the walk. You will need to book 4wd taxi well ahead of time (mobile reception on the island is poor to non-existent) & he will only collect & deliver either side of a low tide, so will need to keep that in mind.

You can walk from Hook point to the start of the walk, but the bottom section of the island is quite dry, open & frankly bit boring, but it's an option nonetheless.

Thanks for the feedback! I've contacted Lisa at Fraser Island taxis who was very helpful, including information about tides and our planned timings. We've ended up booking the taxi to meet the first ferry from River Head to Wanggoobla Creek to take us to Dilli Village, and to pick us up six days later from Happy Valley to meet the 5 pm ferry from Kingfisher Bay back to River Head. Lisa also mentioned the option for food drops if we needed them as well. Transport to and from Fraser Island sorted!
