Carnarvon Gorge Great Walk. Water availability

Postby hunsta » Thu 31 May, 2018 8:48 pm

Just been looking at the topo for this walk and I see there is no water at any of the walkers camps. Can anyone shed light on water availability for this one. Or is it carry all water with you. I do see the first section follows a water system. And the track crosses the odd creek up to West Branch camp. But thats it.
Wanting to tackle this one. But the thought of humping 15ltr+ isnt appealing.
Cheers
Craig

The Queensland Gov Great Walk pamphlet says -
".. Big Bend, where a walkers’ camp, with toilets and untreated water, are provided. "
and "..Gadd’s camp, where toilets and untreated water are provided."
and "..West Branch walkers’ camp. The walkers’ camp provides untreated water and toilets."

and "Consuelo camping zone has no designated camping sites or toilets and provides untreated water only"
and "Cabbage Tree camping zone has no designated camping sites or toilets. Untreated water is provided."

I have not been personally to the sites - but I presume it means that a small rainwater tank is provided. I would check rainfall stats for the area or the rangers for status of these.

The local ranger should be able to give you the heads up on the water situation at the campsites.

Mutley also did a recent trip writeup in the Qld trip report section...

Was there a week ago. Water available in all camps. Big bend is from the river and the others are underground tanks and hand pump. Very clean, but I sterilised anyway. See my trip report posted recently. Cheers

OK My Bad. I took the tap icon with the slash through it as no water. A rookie mistake. Even though I been at this hiking lurk for years. Doh!!!

Yep. This symbol is just stupid. What about a water glass with worms in it for untreated water !!! :-))

Definitely a confusing symbol on the PDF...at 1st glance it does look like there's no water available.
