Kakadu Draft Walking Strategy

Sat 21 Feb, 2015 2:46 pm

The new Kakadu Draft Walking Strategy was released for public comment on 20 February. Comments close on 20 March. You can download a copy from http://www.environment.gov.au/resource/walking-strategy

While much of the document looks pretty good, it recommends completely closing Baroalba Creek above Gubara Pools. this is the most popular (most permits issued) area for overnight bushwalking in the park. (page 105). This is one of only two bushwalking areas currently accessible during the wet season.

It is important that as many people as possible comment. I will have more to say when I've finished wading through the full 208 pages.

Russell, it would be good to get your comments. I may never get a chance to visit Kakadu, but knowing of its global importance, I would appreciate reading your ideas.

Please people, read this strategy and oppose things like:
page 99 – close Baroalba Creek above Gubara for ‘further studies’ . that’s probably the most heavily studied area in the park. It’s also, by number of permits issued, the most popular. We need hundreds of people to object to that or it will set a bad precedent for Australia as a whole.
* reducing the number of permits or routes.
* suggesting that routes be removed as they go near site considered important by the tradn owners. I can walk past the Vatican can I not- as long as I respect it and don't disturb it.
* reject arguments based upon how people " feel" when others get hurt in the park. The only person responsible for feeling bad / or in pain , if & when i get hurt, is me.
Pls read the 200p tome not just the Executive Summary.
