Overnight walks WA

Postby EGM » Fri 09 Feb, 2024 3:14 am

For such a vast state there is little info on overnight walks. Since making the move west I have not been on a single overnighter.

I would love it if we can get a bit of a list of walks 2 to 3 days in duration in WA, as always, bonus points for loop walks.

Cape to Cape is of course on the bucket list but can't quite get enough free days in a row to get it done for a while, I'm sure many can relate.

Let's get a bit more action in the WA section of the forum.

Off the top of my head:

Coastal Plains Walk Trail
Yonga Trail, Lesueur National Park
Wiilman Bilya Trail, Wellington NP
Nyingarn Bidi, Dwellingup (loop)
Old Timberline and Sidings Rail Trails, Nannup
Bibbulmun Wellington Spur Trail, Wellington National Park
Murchison River Gorge Walk
Coastal Trail, Cape Le Grand National Park

Bibblumun Track - Any number of combinations to from day walks to multiple days. In the past, I used to lead weekend walks for the Perth Bushwalkers, which were off-track but overnighting at a Bib Hut. Just another option. Could do something similar with the Munda Biddi.

Kep Track, Mundaring to Northam - Cycling track but could be walked with wild or caravan park camping.

There are some 'old school' walks as well.

The following are detailed in 'A Guide to the Bibblumun Track', which is the guide to the original Bibblumun Track.

Murray Circuit and the Nanga Circuit
Lennard Circuit
Sika Circuit, Collie
Woolbales Circuit, Walpole
Warren Circuit, Pemberton
Crowea Circuit, Pemberton
Woolbaes Circuit, Walpole

The following are detailed in ''Forests on Foot' (1985):

Swamp Oak Brook
Surface MPA
Preston MPA
Mt Leonard Variation
Dryandra Variation
Pony Hill - Talbot
Moons Crossing
Lower Frankland
Frankland Circuit
Mandalay Beach
Lake Maringup
Yeagrup
Petticoat Lane - Warren Beach
Boranup
Fitzgerald River (now two modern walk trails): The Hakea Walk Trail - East Fitzgerald River National Park and the Mamang Trail, Fitzgerald River National Park.

Thank you for the suggestions.

In my research so far a majority that came up were all based around the longer tracks down south.

Do you have any particular favourites? Stirling ridge walk is the other one that comes up every time.

I haven't done any off track walking stuff before, and probably won't be atleast in the short term, but seems quite a few over here that aren't on the bib etc are more off track.

When I was a newly independent adult in WA I'd often walk up to Monadnocks Hut on the Bib track from Sullivan Rock. Not a loop, but it was a nice way to chill out. My other favourite was Walpole to Peaceful Bay over 3 nights.

With respect to the Bibbulmun Track, you can find overnight hike information in each of the Section by Section guides. Here's a sample for the Darling Range:
https://www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au/trip-planner/track-sections/the-darling-range/s-info/.

There's also a great set of longer hikes available at WalkGPS

Thanks for the ideas.

I have researched a few from AusHikers list are they're looking great.

Mentally I'm not a fan of walking smaller sections of longer tracks, it bothers the completionist in me, but it seems like this is something I'm going to have to get past.
Some sections of the bib look too good to pass up.
