Trek to DuCane Feb/March 2013

Postby eggs » Mon 25 Mar, 2013 10:14 pm

After a 2 year break I got back to Tas for a 4 day walk into the Labyrinth.
We were a party of 2 and we took the boat up Lake St Clair on a strange sort of day.
Heavy with cloud, but relatively still - the weather was coming down from the north.

We debated on the best way to run the circuit given the weather, and eventually opted to go in the hard way around Gould and come back on the Overland Track. It was a good start from Narcissus up to the tarns on Gould Plateau. Pleasant walking and no trouble with the track.
However, the weather we had hoped might break up a little was getting heavier and we had lunch in the rain.

Some folk had given us notes on the next section, but perhaps PeterF's online commentary was most accurate for us.
He says that he remembered "lots of scrub", and that seemed to be the case whatever path you chose.
We followed a very clear pad up onto the slopes of Gould, but it then abruptly ended.
It had started to traverse around next to a wide rocky gully, but I suspect we had missed something earlier as I think we were supposed to be higher up above this gully before we began to traverse.
But now we followed our noses through the padless scrub.
Eventually we came out onto more open slopes, but not much easier. The slope was quite steep and the wet branches gave rise to some energy sapping and interesting slips.
I had one memorable slide where I ended up upside down with my legs stuck above me. It was a little awkward working my way back to an upright position :)

Finally we got to the screes. Initially they were good, but as we got higher, they got bigger and wetter. The black moss on them was becoming very slippery, so we again moved very slowly across this.
It was a relief to finally get to the saddle out to the Minotaur.
There was no chance to climb Gould for a view as it was well and truly encased in cloud and we were quite worn by now.
It had taken about 3:40 to cover the 3kms from the plateau. There had been light rain for much of this time.

Finding a basin with some water just below the Minotaur, we set up camp there. We did not go on to the larger saddle towards the Guardians.
It was nice to get some dry clothes on and have a meal. And the setting was very moody as it got darker with cloud streaming over Gould, the Guardians and the mountains to the south, Lake Marion far below.

Next day was a slow start as we were in cloud. And putting on the wet clothes, wet socks and wet boots was sadly amusing.
We knew this was standard procedure in Tas, but still not the sort of thing that you are jumping out of your skin to do.
Heading up towards the top of the Minotaur in mist, we were scanning about for a pad.
I hooked up with one that took us to the very top - but no views.
However, the cloud lifted sufficiently to allow us to pick up the pads heading down and it was a relief to see clearly as we got further down.
The photos folk had put up had misled me a bit, as I thought the gully down was quite near the top. Instead a good pad took us along the skyline quite a distance before gently going down.
After a few hundred metres we got to the real drop, and I was glad to be going down it rather than up.

Then it was up and down a bit as we made for the main track into the Labyrinth. We got to a clear track crossing but then ended up on a rough pad that took us higher.
Not sure how it happened, but this turned out to be the Minotaur pad from the real main track into the Labyrinth.
Our map showed an upper and lower track into the Labyrinth, but it seems that the lower track is not really used.

Once on the official track, it was then a lovely misty walk traversing the Parthenon before dropping down into the lakes - with Cyane and Ophion in cloud.
Had lunch just past Ophion and the cloud started lifting.
It was a relaxed afternoon setting up camp at Elysia and exploring around a bit.

Day 3 dawned with a lot of low cloud. So a relaxed start once again. But the forecast was for clearing conditions, so we headed off for Walled Mt - picking up a light pad over the ridgetop.
The track got much better at the 2 small tarns at the base of the main climb.
This track leads along the northern side of the ridge and eventually enters a small basin before a steep final climb to the top.
Walled Mt had disappeared into cloud on the way up, but it was clearing as we got to the top and improved a lot as we wandered around the cliffs tops.
This was an outstanding vantage point for 360 deg views.
We spent 1:20 up top in addition to the walk times up and back of 2:50.

It was then pack up and lunch before heading off to the Ducane Range as it was really getting sunny and clear.
Roughly 2:50 to get to the camp site on top - which included a break at Pool of Memories on the way.
We took a while to find the correct track up onto the ridge at Pool of Memories.
It crosses a confusing muddy section where I think it also intersects the old direct track down to Pine Valley.
Once on the ridge, the track is very good, including the steep final climb up the gully onto the more easy slopes.

The scoured slopes are a delight with myriad pools and creeks - and great views to the south down Pine Valley and towards the west with Mt Hyperion so close by.
Once we dropped the packs we did an extensive walk - all the way out to the top of Big Gun Pass - checking for a good place to set up.
We settled on a lovely dry grassy section towards the top of the broad upper valley. Water was not a problem.

The sky was clear and it was going to be a cold night. But there were some intriguing mists floating up over the mountains to the south and west as we quietly watched the sun set and darkness fall.

Fascinating cloud forming after sunset

There was ice on the tent the next morning, but it was up well before sunrise with tripod in hand.
The views west were glorious, but a short walk to the top of the saddle took my breath away - as the eastern side was a sea of cloud.
Happy snapping ensued as the sun rose over this white rippled surface - various peaks jutting through - including Mt Ida far to the south.

We spent 2 hours wandering around as the sun rose higher - climbing to the very top of the range, discovering iced up pools and admiring Geryon rising to the south.
It was very special watching cloud streaming over Big Gun Pass with views north to most of the Reserves peaks with only Cradle hidden by the massive Ossa to our north.
To the South West - cloud had been drifting up past Gould and onto the Labyrinth - beautifully lit up by the warm morning sunlight.

Eventually we dragged ourselves away to get some breakfast and pack up.
Given that we had tossed up between Lake Helios and the Ducane for a campsite - eventually opting for the top, we went far enough down the rocky ridges to get a good view over Helios nestled below Hyperion before heading off.
It was a big day ahead as we were hoping to go all the way to Narcissus.
Our plane flight was booked for the next day, so we wanted the early boat to ensure things went smoothly.

It was a brilliant sunny and calm day for the walk, but still quite wearing on the really steep bits.
We spent a half hour fruitlessly attempting to find the low level track out of the Labyrinth.
There were some odd pads and we got out to Lake Erytheia before giving up and going back to the steep climb up the side of the Parthenon.

It was my first time on the Labyrinth track from Pine Valley and the steep exit down tested the knees.
We were quite tired when we got to Pine Valley Hut. I had last been there 33 years ago - and nothing looked familiar.
We ummed and arred before saying lets go for it - and so it was off again for another 9 km walk.
The back and hips needed a few short breaks along the way - but we got into Narcissus around 7:35 pm. We joined a Russian couple in the hut and confirmed a boat for 9:30 am over the radio.

The final day arrived with the trivial task of getting out to the boat landing.
But I had to do it just on sunrise - and wow - mist over the lake, ice on the duckboards and wharf and a platypus swimming past in the mirror smooth Narcissus river.
We got a bit anxious waiting for the boat which was running quite late.
It turns out they were doing a tour of the lake - so walkers had to wait - which was OK on reflection.
We even got to go a bit out of the normal route back and follow the commentary.

We were told that the showers at Cynthia Bay were for guests only, so for $5 each we freshened up at Derwent Bridge Hotel.
We had stayed there in their dongles on the way up - and they are terrific for value and hospitality.
After a lovely lunch we had a slight mixup as we had run the clock down and we had to get going.
A few hours later we pulled in at the airport to hand over the hire car, and it was only then I realised the camera had been left at the hotel.
[It was a new Pentax K5 IIS - with 3 lens and all my photos] There is something about me and cameras :(

The staff had noticed it and thanks to scrubmaster I was able to get it shipped back to Adelaide. So all good. We also trialed a Delorme GPS on the trip.
All up - a tough but thoroughly enjoyable short trip to an area I had not been in before. [Thanks stu]
Getting a few good days was nice and we were also very thankful we had encountered the scrub on Gould first up - as it would have been a shock and a bit risky trying to negotiate it at the end with time running out.
And I lost a bit of weight too - the main reason to go walking!

Great report Brian - and a great set of pix. You brought back some brilliant memories for me, of seemingly easy, and definitely difficult trips in that area. But I'll bet the hard bits are already fading from memory as you scan that fantastic array of scenic and detail shots. Well done! ... And glad to see you got reunited with your K5 8)

One small pick-up ... I think you meant New Holland honeyeater rather than New England. But I suspect it may in fact be a juvenile crescent honyeater. Regardless, a nice pic. Hope it's not two more years till you're back down here again :!:

I keep having trouble with that bird. You are correct - I did mean New Holland.
Yet to visit New England to see if they have any :)

Next trip is New Zealand again [April] - Routeburn booked, but would love to visit Brewster Hut - weather permitting.

Yeah - hard to stay away from that other South Island!

I've walked the Routeburn twice, and still haven't seen much! Loved it anyway. In that area the Greenstone-Caples Track (easier) and the Rees-Dart Track (harder) are both fantastic. I haven't been to Brewster, but it does sound great. If time after the Routeburn is tight, a quick in and out trip to Greenstone Hut would be highly recommended. One of the best huts I've seen anywhere in these two South Islands.

cheers

Yep - we may as well stay out of the March competition Mark

My favourites are the very last shot (mist on the lake, looking towards Olympus) and the "clouds forming after sunset" one. We could always line these up in their own comp. and vote for our fave

Thanks all.
But the competition is safe - my ability to select what the voters will go for is practically non-existent
[Consider that some of these were taken in Feb....]

It's funny you should say that Taurë-rana.
My only other trip into this area was a February 33 years ago - rained all the way into Pine Valley, climbed a snow and cloud covered Acropolis and the cloud eventually cleared for views all around, then hiked out through a lot of hail showers. It was stu that told me to get off my butt and visit the Labyrinth.

I take shots in RAW and jpg, Nuts.
The RAWs always need to be processed, but they contain more info.
The final Acropolis pillars has a lot more clarity than the out of the camera jpg did.
But some of the jpgs have better colour rendering than I can get out of the RAWs.
Most of this selection were just small adjustments to the jpgs using the Microsoft Picture Manager. But getting them down to less than 1MB has reduced the detail in them.
Byron was particularly tough - it was a dull light setting with bright cloud that a camera struggles with.

There are 2 shots which are HDR in the above. I had done a couple of these before, but the new K5 IIs has added the ability to take them hand held - without a tripod.
So I did a few more this time - but using the max HDR setting. After seeing the product, I have a lot to learn about finessing the HDR settings.

I agree that a few of them are overcooked - particularly some misty ones. But I wanted to get this up without spending a lot more time on it.
Fact is - I still haven't selected all the ones I think are any good. [The curse of digital cameras]

I should add - there are a few panoramas in these [Gould Plateau, Pool of Memories and Elysia view] - and these and the others will display better if you open them up by clicking on them.

Great write up Brian.
Enjoyed all the moody photos you took with the clouds and mist. Really like the ones of lake st claire.

Yeah I could see a slight halo in some photos, e.g. surrounding the pillars in the acropolis photo (great shot by the way) which can be from hdr editing. I tend to prefer more subtle hdr but each to their own. You have many contenders for the photocomps I think :)
