Bluestonebay Walk - Freycinet

Postby Tasallan » Wed 24 Nov, 2010 7:10 pm

Myself and a group of friends did the Bluestone Bay walk on Tuesday and what a wonderful walk it is. The wildflowers were amazing and the coastal views spectacular and a walk we all recommend, however our Parks department does not seem to encourage the public to do this walk. Firstly the Bluestone Bay sign is not visible from Cape Tourville road but about 200 metres along the Bluestone Bay road itself – photo attached – and as you can see is in the new blue corporate signage used by Parks. Once you drive the 2.3KM to the end of the road – we drove a Subaru Forester with no problems – it is virtually impossible to find the start of the walk – no signs whatever – we bush bashed down the gully and up the other side until we found the well formed track. If you walk up the dry creek bed the GPS to find the start of the track is S42.10417 E148.32997.
It is sad that Parks do not open this walk up to the public in a better way, after all it is a NP for the people – I am told that the track may well be leased out to commercial operators hence the Parks reluctance to publicise

Does the walk go north further up the coast TA or the other way.

Hi Tasallan,
Like Gerry I would be interested to know which direction you went. Did the track go north from Bluestone? If northerly direction, did you go all the way through to Friendly Beaches (there is a lagoon at the southern end of the beach)?
Cheers
Andrew

Yes the walk certainly heads north - when you reach the top of the ridge it is lovely walking and we thought the track was about 10km in length and finishes at Bluestone Bay itself. When you have walked at least half the distance the Lagoon is clearly visible at the end of the track. Rough map is attached to display this walk.

Frank's camp is very basic, some cleared area with a large wooden table and a bush toilet - that is the extent of it. Frank's Camp was made quite a few years ago by a 4WD club.

Just thought I would check thelist.tas.gov.au TA. The map shows Bluestone and Little Bluestone about a kilometre apart. I suspect you may have started at Bluestone Bay and headed north to Freshwater Lagoon!

Yeah my old camira wagon made the trip down to bluestone a couple times..
Great spot that not many people end up seeing with those big boulders. The more accessible Sleepy bay is very nice as well though, good diving around the rocks there.
