WOJ & Cradle/WFV Hut/ Scott-Kilvert

Postby Lizzy » Fri 09 Dec, 2011 9:27 am

Hi all,
End of Nov/early Dec I was lucky enough to spend a few delightful days with a friend doing a couple of walks. The first was into the Walls, camping for 2 nights at Wild Dog Creek. On the walk up we ran into Tasadam at Trappers Hut- I could pick him by his huge camera! Day to was spectaucular and we walked up Solomons Throne, out to Mt Jeruslaem via Dixons Kingdom and returned make a trip up The Temple. The views were amazing and we were grateful at how relatively easy the walking was in our decidedly unfit state.....After a weather report for some stromy weather we decided to bail the next day and have a night of luxury before our next walk.

Part 2: Cradle Area

Postby Lizzy » Fri 09 Dec, 2011 9:54 am

So after a night off we set out out into some "Tasmanian" weather of rain from Ronny Creek up the Horse Track. On the walk up the track was running like a river and then the rain turned to sleep and snow. The duckboarding was wet and icy- I managed to slip over landing on my elbow and feeling something ominous in my shoulder give. I lay there in the water for a bit self assessing and was quite suprised that everything felt relatively intact so we got to Kitchen Hut for a hot milo and nurofen! It was sleet/snowing and then hailing with cold gusty wind on the walk out to Waterfall Valley Hut but beautiful none the less. We were glad to have a nice hut to stay in and there were about 13 Overlanders there that night plus a couple of other girls doing a similar circuit to us but in reverese.
Next morning awoke to a white snowy wonderland- twas awesome! By the way have I mentioned my new love affair with my brand spanking new WM Apache sleeping bag- oh so puffy & oh so toasty :D :D I am a cold sleeper & normally have a hard time staying warm but not in that baby!!!
So we set off up thru the snow and spent ages taking photos. We had intended to climb Barn Bluff but decided it would have to wait. The walk was fun and we were glad of having a hiking stick to poke out a path and prevent "some" icy spashes into the hiding pools beneath the snow
Scott-Kilvertt was lovely- another terrific haven although the weather was much brighter now. We shared the place with an old fella who is doing the Abels (hat off to him- I think he walks twice as fast and far as us!!) and a young couple camping. Also some lovely pademelons and a wombat.
Day 3 and we were off to Dove Lake via Twisted Tarns- beautiful once again with a lovely display of wildflowers. So we had made it! Well that is where the fun began.... as I attemted to climb into the back of the shuttle bus with my pack on my should gave way & I fell out the back staight onto my backpack (luckily). Oocchhh :(
Seems to be a bit of a rotator cuff tear- not amused. But movement is improving....... so hopefully not as bad as initially felt. So no video footage of the fall.....

Some truly beautiful photos there :D

Sorry to hear about your shoulder, though. I injured my rotator cuff years ago and it's still not quite right. Don't do what I did (be in denial about it and avoid getting treatment) - go see a physio ASAP!

HI Lizzy,
Only just saw this post.
Looks like a great trip!
How is the shoulder??
I've just spent 3 months impatiently waiting for a torn ligament in my foot to heal.
Better one week, worse the next week, better a fortnight later then bad for a month, etc, etc, etc!
What is it with these bodies of ours???
Don't they understand they have to hang in there and deal with it all!!!

Hi Melinda,
Yeah not so great news with shoulder- ends up I had dislocated it (must have popped back in luckily), torn the labrum (cup like area that holds ball in socket) which in turn gave head of humerus a compression fracture.... :( Anyway off for surgery tomorrow so I will be out of the game for a bit. Very sad... but hopefully can get it sorted and better rather than drag it out.
Hope your foot is OK for WArthurs!

Hope surgery goes well. Agree better off doing it sooner rather than later.
'Foot' is going whether it likes it or not!
Keep us posted on how it's going.
Take care!

Hey thanks guys. Surgery went well was lucky to get it done just before Christmas! Now I am suffering thru 7 weeks of my right arm being in a sling over school holidays :( Very annoying not being able to drive & get the kids out & about. Also all this wasted time off work where I could be bushwalking
I only have a couple of weeks before I am due to start a new job so I am hoping it gets better real quick!! A week & a bit left in sling and then physio. Surgeon said I should be able to throw a ball in 6 months
Certainly makes you appreciate good health & all that.
Cheers

Hi Lizzy. Glad the surgery went well. I know how frustrating it is injuring yourself doing what you love. I had a silly fall skiing the season before last first morning of my trip (first injury in 17 years of skiing/boarding)...clean tore my acl, mcl, lcl and other tissue damage. Whilst frustrating I set myself a six month goal (to walk kozi and surrounds) which was a great thing to focus/look forward to and keep me on top of my rehab post surgery. It worked a treat and these days thankfully my knee is stronger than pre surgery (now I've just got to work on the rest of me ;-)

I hope you have a smooth, speedy recovery and are back on the trail soon.

Thanks Mic- good to hear your knee is stronger- thats very encouraging! Hope your move went/is going well- we lived up in sunny Qld for a while, good if you don't mind it a bit steamier. Now you will have lots of new areas to explore & should be good for hammocking. Kind of intrigues me the hammocking thing but better not get any ideas for a while....
Cheers
