On Sat. morning I met my hiking companions Richard and Grant in Mt.Beauty for a hike up from Bogong Village to The summits of the Fainters. It was sunny and clear and once we had squeezed through the gate at the AGL power plant and headed an hour up the Spring Saddle fire trail we were sweating like Finns in a sauna.
It was tough and unrelenting in that sun. There was water trickling across the track at a few points before the hairpin bend and track junction with Spring Saddle track and the Fainters track.
We took lunch there.
We slogged it up and up to Bogong Jack Saddle where we set up camp. The views on the way up were spectacular. The spring /soak just before the camp site at Bogong Jack was trickling just enough to pump up with our water filters . The cool fresh water that we pumped into our bladders and containers was very refreshing . We were all out of water having guzzled quite a bit in the stiff walk up the mountain in the sun.
The camp site is brilliant and we had it to ourselves. There was a lot of wild horse/ brumby poo there. We got up there at about 3.30pm. We were all reasonably stuffed too. The BJ Hut is n't anything to rave about but it would be welcome in cold ,windy and wet weather.
The Sunset over Mt. Buffalo was lovely.
The evening was spent under the stars in front of a campfire.Nice !
We got up on Sunday at 0630 am , watched the sunrise over Mt. Bogong ,left our tents up and did a day pack mission on the summits of the Fainters. We met two other walkers who had camped on the fire trail , only 15 min.s above the Bogong Jack Saddle. They were running low on water and had no pump up water filters, whereas being equipped with a pump up filter the tricking soaks on the fire track above the Bogong Jack saddle , were all quite serviceable for gathering water to drink and to cook with.
The 360 degree mountain views from the top in ideal March weather were second to none and we had the place to ourselves.
We descended after photos were taken at Mt. Fainter summit south and north . Our tents had dried out quite well in the sun after a dew filled night . We packed up, ate and slogged it down the hill back to Bogong village. We saw a mountain biker on the way down otherwise there was no one else around.Richard went ahead to fetch the car from opposite the Bogong Village pub/cafe while Grant and I had a rest in front of the gate .
It was a 36 kms in two days hike with 1100 M. ascent and a 1100 M. descent.
What a great trip !.
