Mt Bogong Winter Hike

Mon 19 Aug, 2013 2:22 pm

Hi there

I went up Bogong last weekend: Track on Garmin. It was a bit windy and Sunday was a complete white-out but still fun. For obvious reasons I didn't take many pics but I found a geocache.

The main reason why I'm posting this is to let everyone know that the access via Eskdale Spur is really good. Drive up from Mountain Creek via Trappers Gap to Camp Creek Gap which is the bottom of Eskdale Spur. It's absolutely doable in a 2WD thanks to a new graded track.

Cheers
Philipp

Thanks for the heads up, Philipp. I walked in from Mountain Creek up Eskdale last time, always happy to be a bit of a cheat! :)

Phillip, the new access track does now allow 2wd access, but is still very slippery when wet/snowy.

However, I think it needs to be made clear that anyone going up Eskdale needs to take chains in winter. Even though it is now mostly a 2 WD track, chains (and chainsaw) may be needed. I did think about the track last weekend, with those v strong N /NW winds. Dead trees down +++. Low snow. Chains and chainsaw needed.

The map doesn't show the new driving route.....but it's a good map of Bogong.

Still need chains in winter........!

Yep, I saw the topic....but you still need to get there.

My post wasn't a criticism. It was an observation. Problem with forums.

It was a good map.

And currently Falls and Hotham have had 80 cm of snow in the last week, so Bogong will be in supreme winter condition. I've got 2 late Sept trips planned, so v excited.

My point was that even though the road is now easily traversed in 2wd in good conditions, it is actually v slippery, and after heavy rains you may still need chains in a 2wd.

It rained the night before I drove up and the track wasn't really slippery. I slipped once a bit because I was driving too fast (60 km/h in a narrow bend) but chains are overrated atm. If the forecasted temperatures at 1000m are well above 0°C it's unlikely to snow - http://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/ ... casts/1000

That said - don't underestimate Bogong: http://www.australianalpineclub.com/pag ... t07_05.htm
