Very nice, was up at Buller for the weekend, the weather was great!
Unfortunately, I think a lot of the snow will wash away this weekend!

Eggs, you presume right. The hike back to Stirling from Craig's hut there was alot of snow on the track softened by the sun. Would have been very hard work without snow shoes. Not sure what the range is called don't have my map with me, it is looking roughly north west from Clear Hills Trail.

Are you sure you mean north west and not north east? That shot with the walker looks like the beginning of the descent not far from the summit of Stirling, which would make the line of snowy hills running out to the highest peaks the Thorn Range, with Howitt, the Crosccut Saw, Buggery and Speculation behind.
I don't see anything resembling Cobbler, and that's the most distinctive peak to the northwest from Stirling/Craig's.

Of course, I'm notoriously bad at recognising landmarks . . .

Yes typo, you are correct north-north-west that is looking North-East.

And a lovely weekend it was, too. Lucky sods.

During last week I did this little snow shoe shuffle. Bluebird skies greeted me with a nice snow depth, interesting people were around the place and I met fellow member paidal_chalne_vala which was a surprise. The walk was beautiful over the top of Mt Stirling and down the back. Seeing all the animal prints in the snow was interesting, trying to guess which track went with which animal. Arrived at Craig's Hut near dusk and was faced with an entry/exit sign, what the? Well you can guess which path I took. That night being the only one there, I went to sleep directly in front of the crackling fire. Ahh bliss.

The next morning after taking a couple of nice shots I took off back up to explore the rest of the Mountain. On the walk up the hill I saw a young stag bounding effortlessly through the snow. It was absolutely breath taking as powder snow was kicked up through the air, creating light prisms all around it. The whole thing seemed ethereal and like nothing and I mean nothing has come as close to being so beautiful EVER! To wrapped up in the moment to take a photo of him, though the memory is still glowing vividly, I must have stood grinning for 10 minutes.

The rest of the day was sort of anticlimactic after that. Bluebird sky and beautiful snow couldn't compare. Snow camped that night and then shot off home the next day.
I was surprised with the amount of huts that Stirling has, all with firewood presupplied. You can even rent some tents that have a big teepee as a communal area with a wood heater in it. Had a terrific time and will certainly be back.

Thanks for posting this . Craig's hut is definitely on my bucket list for this year as it gets a bit warmer . .. Pics look fantastic

This was how Craig's Hut was looking on Saturday arvo. There's still snow in the carpark (where a few people who must have been really keen to snow camp had pitched their tents), but it's on the way out in a hurry.

Quite a change from Walkon's pic from 6 weeks' earlier! I hope there's still plenty of cover on Bogong!
