I know I'm getting too fatigued and its camp time when....

Postby puredingo » Wed 21 Oct, 2015 1:55 pm

I start to stray off a pretty obvious foot pad wat too often.

Any other examples?

I trip over my own feet and fall head first into the snow then struggle to get up because my pack suddenly weighs 10 tonnes.

Just move it!

The old not bending low enough and ramming your pack into the fallen tree trick is also a good indicator....

When I start considering setting up my tent across the track itself as the only piece of open ground.

When I start rationalizing that the next good campsite will be 1/2
/3 hours away, so I may as well find the next good spot, .... or... I start thinking if I stop now, that's 500 grams less food and fuel I need to carry tomorrow... Or, I start thinking " if I stop now, I'll get some great pics around the camp site."

LOL. On one trip, for unknown reasons, I simply ran out of energy. Usual sort of days, usual sort of climbs, usual sort of meals. And yet I was stopping at the snowpoles and between them, totally gone. Six months ago I zoomed up that hill, Dibbins Hut to Derrick Hut, one short stop, easy! The only spots I saw were where the tent went, and a few insect bites.

Ha, funny how you can rationalize an excuse for anything if you want it badly enough.

Walking on the weekend having just got back from 2 weeks of surfing in Indo and totally unwalk fit i glanced to the heavens on a particulary steep section and spied a cloud roughly about the size of a pillow..."better hunker down before the big wet sets in" I reasoned.

When the pink chicken and monkey stop dancing and start pointing at me and laughing (or was that the indicator that I ate the wrong mushrooms??)

Yep, when I have enough of my 10yo whining about walking in the dark and climbing over fallen trees, and I know we are close to our planned campsite but not sure exactly how close, and I can hear the storm approaching and camping in the middle of the track seems like a really good idea...

Seriously,(I know the subject is not meant to be serious) you should have a rest or even a nap.
Get to camp a bit later and walk safely.
