Walking for Christmas

Postby Hermione » Sun 13 Dec, 2015 8:21 pm

Anyone planning a walk over Christmas? We will be heading to Tasmania with our two twenty something daughters. Planning on spending a week (Walls of Jerusalem) walking including Christmas Day. The logistics of this are quite time consuming since we live in Perth and the girls are at Uni in Melbourne. However it gets us out of extended family Christmas (don't get me wrong I love my family but ....) and into the bush. Love to hear what everyone else has planned.

I wish I was walking the WOJ this Christmas :)
I did the OLT a couple of years ago at Christmas time - it was great and a nice change from the usual. Even took mini puddings and UHT cream - yum! And fairy lights :)
Enjoy your walk Hermione!

Sounds like tasty Christmas fare Kitty. I have to say actual Christmas food is the biggest bone of contention, the oldest hates Christmas pudding unfortunately! We've told the girls everyone has to bring one Christmas treat to eat on the actual day.

Sounds great Hermione! My partner and I are doing the Great Ocean Walk over Christmas. I'm from the US and living here temporarily, and I know what you mean about avoiding the extended family. I love my family to pieces but getting to get away at Christmas rather than rushing from one gathering to another for a week or two is fantastic.

Hope you have a lovely walk.

Sounds like you guys have some great trips planned too. Paddling would definitely be the way to go with the weather heating up. Though as we're heading Tassie I expect rain and or snow.

Don't knock Christmas snow. It's brilliant. I'm hoping for some, wherever I go. Unless it's the Denisons. Or the Frankland/Wilmot traverse. Or Tramontane . . . hmmmmm, no, actually, the Amphitheatre under snow would be gorgeous . . .

Don't worry north-north-west I'm not knocking it, Christmas snow would be awesome. It's heat that I can't stand.

Hi Hermione
Have a great time in Tassie - I wish I was back there. <yearn>
I'll be taking my new GirlFriend (who has a keen desire to learn water and walking) for an overnighter paddle on Eildon near the Big River entrance. I've never been there but hoping for fun. Apart from which we'll do some easy walks with swims in King Lake.
But Tassie - Aahhh.
Planning to celebrate my birthday (mid April) by walking the Tarn Shelf and photographing the Nothofagus....

Have a great time

Thanks Steve, I know what you mean about Tassie. We just keep going back, this will be the second time this year. I accidentally took a month off work so we had to use it somehow!
I have vague recollections of Eildon as a little kid but that was 40 years ago so might be different now! Sounds like a nice relaxed trip though, so have a great time.

Yeah, that is harsh puredingo.... How about I paint another scenario. Be the man. Work 6-7 days a week, 10-18 hour days all year. Accept that some months you simply won't be have enough money to cover basic expenses. Do not have a regular "pay day". If you hurt yourself, get to ER & back to work the next day. Have one break off in Winter- a 3 day escape to the snow with your family over a weekend. Then come Christmas, hope everyone pays up (they haven't) so you can buy your kids Christmas presents, book a caravan park 6 months in advance for Xmas for 4 days off (inc Christmas day & Boxing day)..... Yeah working for the man must be hard!

Annual leave, sick pay, superannuation, regular pay that glides into your bank without ringing up anyone.... must be tough.

However, I think that the one thing I have come to realize, is that work is essential for people to feel productive. It gives a scene of accomplishment and belonging and does much for a someones own self worth. The unemployment line would never be an easy option. Even if it seems that way at times.

We are living the dream!!! We are going to thoroughly enjoy our camp this year. With our family. All 5 of us! It is such a luxury to have some time off.

And yep.. we will be walking over Christmas.

Down to some waterfalls that no one really goes,
We will follow that hand drawn map and our nose,
Off down a mossy track and past some very old trees.
Down to where the forest meets the sea.

We will walk with our feet facing forward,
While our adventures parade in our head,
We will walk with light feet and not dread.

We will walk with our family in tow,
Because what we find we do not yet know.
Our children will scamper around bends and track,
With a sense of freedom little ones never seem to lack.

For their love of the outdoors is growing you see,
And it is our responsibility to allow them that Christmas glee.

Sounds great Hermione - and brilliant to have such an authentic bush experience with your daughters.

A few Christmases ago, after our three kids had left home, my wife and I took off for 10 days sea kayaking up the Gordon River with some friends. We even ventured a little way up the mighty Franklin (until we discovered how unwieldy sea kayaks are in rapids!!) That was a truly different and very peace-filled Christmas. This year will still be great, as we're having everyone here in Hobart. And I should type it EVERYONE, given how very productive our children have been. We're suddenly up to 7 grandchildren

We hope to take some of the "grandies" up kunanyi/Mt Wellington to see our local Christmas display - the waratah in bloom. Hopefully you'll find some flowering in the Walls too. Enjoy!

Ah the Gordon. I've only done the commercial tour but it looks like a wonderful place to paddle.
Definitely on the to do list.

We should be somewhere on the AAWT just past Kiandra heading north on Christmas day. Gave a couple of treats stashed in a food drop for the occasion but that's about it for the extension if our celebrations. Just happy to be out and about in the Australian bush for the day.

Just arrived in Hobart after a week walking waiting for my turn in the shower. Hope everyone had a safe and happy Christmas walking or otherwise. I'll try to post a trip report when I'm reunited with my computer in a week or so.
