A web site for GPS tracks...???

I'm interested to know if there is a web site out there where users can upload their GPS tracks of where they have been walking for others to download. I have found http://www.wikiloc.com/ but note that it comes with a truck load of advertising and appears to not be heavily used by Australians.

Till just recently I have always walked with a map, picked good days, and if the weather has turned decidedly nasty, walked out on either that day, or the next. I never bothered with a GPS. Now I have my 15 year old son interested I thought it prudent to add a GPS and PLB to our kit.

So recently I completed Mount Filed West with my son and had a Garmin eTrex 30 (2nd hand but new to me) pinging away. As we walked out in some unfriendly weather there was a mad Scotsman, seemed right at home and very cheerful coming across the Rodaway's and with a smile on his face asked if he was on the right path for soggy sandwiches at Pederson Memorial Hut.

The thought occurred to me, I wonder if I could upload my track somewhere? Is it possible to download tracks from others in places I have not yet been? Does anyone else do this? Or is this something I can put my hobby time towards on those evenings when I am at home and cant be out in the wilds.

I am interested in the thoughts or observations of others.

there used to be 'everytrail' but i think it got bought up and then badly neglected - no idea if the owners are providing IT support to it again.

Every time I go for an overnight or longer walk I search a few terms like "mt anne circuit gps" or kml, etc, and quite often you'll find one. Many times it'll be a Tasmanian's blog, sometimes it'll pop up on a running or hiking site dedicated to maps. It's very handy to have a track to follow just in case visibility is low or it's not marked on the tasmap sheets (seems like more tracks are missing than marked recently).

I've also been collecting my own tracks for uploading - but haven't got around to cleaning them up and sorting them for others to use. Whoever gets it started I'm sure plenty of people will piptch in !

Upload them to OpenStreetMap? (https://www.openstreetmap.org)

You can edit the map as well.

I find that it's much more useful when GPS tracks are transcribed onto OSM. No need to follow a GPS track but follow the map.

What I like about Wikiloc is that you can switch on a weekly email of other tracks near the ones you uploaded. It's interesting to see what variations other people make on routes that you have done.

There is a lot of advertising on Wikiloc. A less commercial site with a similar purpose is gpsies.com, but it still has some advertising. Both of those sites are more widely used in Europe than Australia, but hey, you could start a trend.

There's gpsies. A worldwide collection of gps tracks (not just walking). Quite a few from Australia.
