Guide book - Moss & Lichen

Postby Happy Pirate » Mon 16 May, 2016 7:28 pm

OK so this is a kinda specific topic but...
In the process of encouraging my GF's interest in walking and camping she's got pretty keen on looking into Mosses and Lichens.
So I thought I'd buy her a Field Guide and thunked to myself 'Ha easy - there'll be a couple to choose from.'
Nyet. Nada. Nicht.
The best I can find through extensive lurking on the Interwebs is "A Field Guide to the Mosses and Allied Plants of Southern Australia" which is an out of print supplement to the 100(?) volume release "Flora of Australia" by CSIRO. The best price I can find for this is about $500
Or else I can buy vol. 51 of the series "Flora of Australia"; "Mosses [part one]" for $130; (volumes 2+) being also out-of-print.
Are there any Bryophytologists (amateur or otherwise) out there who can advise or even sell me a book on moss & Lichen?
(I know of "Mosses and Liverworts of Rainforest in Tasmania and South-eastern Australia" but think it is all Tasmanian based?)
Who'd have thought it would be such a 'fruitless' attempt (boom - tish)
Steve

Sometimes, I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Not sure where you are from. I think this field is not well supported. Here is one guide -

Hi Steve, try here but you have probably already seen these.

http://www.publish.csiro.au/bcid/50.htm

I think that the major difficulty is huge number of Aussie moss and lichen species. It seems like there are 10's of thousands of them, which makes for a pretty big field guide. It might also explain why the books I've seen are by State.

Cheers

One thing to remember is even with a Field Guide a lot of mosses and lichens are extremely hard to ID in the field. Also there are some ferns that look like moss and some that look like liverwort and therefore won't be found in these books.

Thanks for the replies folks.
As someone who studied botany at Uni I recognise the difference between a scholarly text and an amateurs introduction.
My idea was to try to gently encourage interest without overwhelming her with a botanical catalogue.
Plenty of stuff on Fungi - maybe I'll try and divert the interest...
cheers
