I've lost it!! Help me.

Postby puredingo » Wed 28 Sep, 2016 3:53 pm

In February this year I finally joined the rest of the bushwalking fraternity and got myself a PLB, actually it was gift for my birthday....anyway I've lost it. So if this weekend it isn't on top of Mt Talerterang are there any other avenues for retrieval?

Maybe since its a tracking device its trackable? I couldn't find any info out on their site other than let them know.

If it's registered (and stickered) it'll find its way back to you if found (maybe not likely found in Talaterang scrub though??)

Nup, completely passive unless activated, so doesn't emit anything that can be tracked.

Yep, as above unfortunately.
If it's registered with AMSA contact them and let them know you've lost it.

Thanks for the replys boys, it is registered so I guess I can live in hope?

If it is up Mt Talaterang it shouldn't be in much scrub. After you climb the up to the first terrace, coming in from Mt Bushwalker, you then climb a small hill which allows you views along the length of the rest of the western side of the mountain and views out to the Castle etc. on top of that hill is a rocky knoll, on that knoll there is a small rock, square pit I had my lunch in.

I did dig about in my bag a bit as it was blowing a freezing gale...so...maybe?

i am sorry for your loss.... BUT, i am a little amused due to your history of leaving expensive electronic litter in the bush.

Let AMSA know as well as enter it in the notes associated with your registration. This way should it get activated, AMSA would know the story and respond accordingly.

Ha! Yes Jack, it was only a matter of time really.

I'll do that GPSguided. I wonder if a device like this is any good to someone who stole it? Obviously they would get the rescue potentially saving their life but would it be exposed as stolen being registered to another.

My first GPS was stolen. Notified AMSA (as well as police) but never heard anything back. Presumably that means it was never used . . .

Agree, suspect AMSA would still activate the SAR response on a stolen/lost PLB, even if it's not registered. So for the 3rd party, save one's life first and then worry about the excuses later. No prospect for you Puredingo unfortunately I'd say.

True, but if it turns out to be a malicious or mischievous activation, puredingo won't be blamed for it if he has notified AMSA of the loss.

If it is activated puredingo's emergency contacts will be notified. Who ever finds it should not be able to register it for their own use.

Given it requires yearly registration, it may already be unregistered by the time that third party activates the beacon.

Neils' right here......when a PLB is 1st activated the usual process is a phone call by AMSA to one of the listed primary emergency contacts to confirm the general where-abouts of the registered owner. Once that's done then if required the rescue process is initiated. There'd be a fair few accidental activations of PLB's I'd think but until 100% sure other wise I'd hope that all activations are treated as actual emergencies. So apart from carrying the PLB it's important to notify your primary contacts where you'll be in case of an activation.

I have a GME PLB and carry it always when I'm deer hunting in the mountains and my wife jokes (I think) that if it was ever activated and AMSA contacted her regarding where I was she'd just say that I was out in the shed and that it must be an error ! Or at least I hope that she was joking.....LOL ! Cheers

From the AMSA website - "Registration is valid for two years after date of issue and must be renewed before its expiry date"

G'day wobbly, nah no luck. I've checked the most likely spots it could have been left behind but nothing.

Looks like it's time to face facts and think about a re-purchase.
