Dogs in National Parks

It doesn’t appear that these are service animals.

I remember bumping into a guy when we were descending Snowy South once who was heading up with a full pack on and was being companied by his 3 legged dog. Me being me, I was too polite to say anything about it, and just said something about the lack of a fourth leg. :?

Looks like the same dogs that were seen being taken through . . . was it the Southern Range . . . a few years back. These people are serial offenders.

As Xplora says, give Parks a heads up & if your unhappy with his conduct leave a comment on his YouTube page...by his attitude in the comments section, you probably won't change his viewpoint though.

That's appalling!!! I love my dogs, but a NP is no place for them. I once came across man and dog descending snowy south as well, dog was not particularly friendly to me , so can imagine how unfriendly it was to native animals. Let's hope this character and his dog are stopped

Clueless. Gets lost trying to skirt Vera off-track so he doesn't get caught. No navigational sense or equipment by the look of it.

Not a lot of consideration for the dogs, either. At least one of them did not want anything to do with those bridges.

Towards the end of the Youtube video, he writes

First dog to climb Frenchmans Cap

Funnily enough, that’s exactly what I thought ;)

You missed my point I believe. The dog reference should not be assumed to be with reference to the canines.

Nah, those dogs(and any dog) are nicer than 99% of humans. So your assertion is crude/crass/dumb and therfore entirely human. i.e. well below dog...remember who made the video... Woof!

I’m a dog owner, I agree strongly in this case and in most cases, that dogs should not be allowed in NP’s but not all cases. Anywhere that is wilderness or of significant heritage value should never allow dogs into the park. But this blanket “No dogs allowed” leads to dog owners ignoring the rule and just accepting the fine if caught, it’s not a criminal offence. I would like to see some common sense in this regard.

There are many areas which are not wilderness and have no significant heritage value, full of rubbish, high-power lines, roads, horse manure, feral animals and fire trails that have been eroded by bike riders, horses and 4WD’s.

If it was up to me, I would allow dogs in certain areas, particularly urban areas. Every dog would need to be microchipped, owners must carry doggie bags and have a NP “dog” pass to enter. I would up the fines dramatically for infringements, I wouldn’t allow camping with dogs (there are State Forests for that) and use the money raised through fines and passes to increase funding for eradicating feral animals.

There is a lot of money to be made by NP’s if they used common sense in this regard. And if dog owners don’t show common sense, fine the living daylights out of them.

He has been fined by PWS. I hope the police look at the video 12:45 in, he throws rocks at a snake. That's a seperate offence.

Good job PWS.

As for the snake, I didn’t watch the whole thing until you said about it.

I wish it had got him on the way past.

$330 fine is sod all. Should be a grand minimum, plus suspension of his Parks Pass (assuming he has one).
