12 Hike Challenge

Postby solohiker » Wed 10 Jan, 2018 6:14 am

I’ve set myself a goal this year of getting out on a hike at least once per month doing a variety of different types of walk. I want variety, challenge and reward! Above all, I want to simply enjoy the walks and maybe inspire a few others to head out too.
I call it the12 Hike challenge and I wrote it up on the link below. If anyone else is doing something similar or wants to do this themselves I’d love to hear about it!

I'm going to do this, looks like a lot of fun. I'll think of my list and post it when it's finished.

Awesome! I’d love to see what you decide on. Quite a few folks have decided to do this now! It’s fun coming up with the list and then researching the actual hikes.
Going to be fun!
I’ve done my first hike- a short hike with a view:

I suspect that for some folks on the forum it should be 12 hikes a month in order for them to be a challenge :D

Ok, here's my list:

Waterfall Hike
Overnight Hike
Multi day hike
Local Hike
Hike Aus highest peak
Water hike (kayak overnight)
Beach hike and camp
Trail run event
New national park
Hike to a lookout
Hike to a cave
Sea Cliff Hike

I did an overnighter a bit over a week ago, Mt Kuring-Gai Station to Crosslands, then Crosslands to Berowra station the next day, so I can scratch that one off the list.

Sounds like a lot of fun! Love the water based hikes.
Highest peak will be awesome- such a great view and it’s not too taxing a climb. I’ll be doing the second highest this year so I’ll wave at you from the other mountain!
Great list!

Yeah, I’m planning on doing the main range track early feb sometime, might even spend the night, weather permitting.

I’ve always wanted to rent a kayak and paddle up shoalhaven gorge, so I figure if I don’t put it on my list, I’ll never do it!

Camp in a cave
Camp in Hollow Mountain, northern Grampians. Not a big stretch of a drive for you from Maryborough. :)

A desert hike
Depends what you mean by desert, as there are several types in Australia. In terms of arid land but not range upon range of sandhills, hike from Silverton NSW to Eldee Station (camp), 19km away through ... the great nothingness. Lots of critters to observe and follow you: eastern browns, inland taipans, very large spoyders, harmless blue-tongues, skinks, emus, roos, wild pigs... and more stars in the Big Sky than you can poke a camera at. No, I haven't walked but I have mountain biked it (definitely not to be done in summer). On that trip the Barrier Range on your right would be your constant companion ensuring some directional stability.

A gruelling physical challenge
Getting up on Monday for work... :?

I took the opportunity to squeeze in February's hike, by doing a local hike yesterday morning at Greenpoint. A nice easy trail on Lake Macquarie. I've run this before, but I've always stuck to the trail that runs along the edge of the lake, so I decided to slow down and have a look around at the other sections that I've never been to before, including the impressive Sea Eagle Lookout (attached). I've signed up for my first trail run event, a 12k down at Bobbin Head in April (Jabulani Challenge), so now I just need to come up with a hike for March.

Enjoying this challenge, thanks again for posting it!

Pretty spot!
A few hills on that Bobbin head run! I’m getting out on a few runs myself but am not up to something like this yet. Have fun!

I did the trail run on Saturday. You're right, there was one decent hill getting toward the North Turramurra section that almost killed me. But it was an awesome run, slower than my usual pace, for sure, but I seeded myself for a 2hr course and came in at 2:02, so I can't complain!

I kind of didn't reeeeeally get out hiking in March, apart from my usual Green Point to Valentine run, and another down to Glenrock Lagoon, BUT there's an established bush track thats all of about 150m straight through the middle of my Uni that I use to get to class, and I did that at least twice a week... so I'm claiming it, hahaha!

I done quite a few of my walks now.
May: Terry’s Creek Walk http://solohiker.blog/2018/05/30/12-hik ... rys-creek/
April: The Convict Road https://solohiker.blog/2018/05/02/12-hi ... vict-road/
March: Pindar Cave https://solohiker.blog/2018/04/04/12-hi ... ndar-cave/
Feb: Australia’s Three Highest Peaks https://solohiker.blog/2018/02/23/12-hi ... australia/
Jan: A Dawn Walk with a View https://solohiker.blog/2018/01/17/the-d ... th-a-view/

I love that the challenge is forcing me to find ways to get out when all my weekends are full already! I’m hoping to tackle the northern parts of the Great North Walk in the coming months but if not I’ll do something equally fun!
