TasMaps digital download-get printed on waterproof 'paper'?

Postby myrtlegirl » Fri 06 Apr, 2018 8:55 pm

Now that the TasMap 1:25k maps are available as digital downloads but aren't being re-printed, I'm hoping someone has found a place that will print them on waterproof 'paper'. 10 years ago I bought (and have since 'misplaced') maps for the Larapinta Trail that were printed on a delightful ultra-thin, super-light, tear-&-water-proof 'paper', and I'd like to find this printer or someone else who can do the job.

I did call the TasMap crew 10 years ago to suggest they have an option to get maps printed on similar paper, but 'nah, it'd cost too much'; though soon after Overland 1:50k maps became available on JPP synthetic, at around $16, or 20% less than map+laminating. I've emailed to ask for the contact details of their printer.

Any help appreciated!

I wish I could help. I work at a print / photography facility, but I don’t think pigment inks will ever be truly waterproof. We mostly print with large format inkjet printers (44”). There seems to be synthetic Aqueous / inkjet (waterproof-tear proof) papers around but I’m skeptical, and I imagine most of those maps would be printed using solvent or even offset printing.

Drop in or have a chat to Officeworks about printing on tyvek...you can place a rock in each corner to weigh it down and read it under water if you wish.

It works, I print all my topo maps on tyvek and they become multipurpose items. I have found A1 size great to serve double duty as a floor mat for my hammock setup

Print on Tyvek at OfficeWorks - how wonderfully simple! Thanks ofurus and taipan821.

I just love that feeling of finding new gear/solutions. My weekend has started well.

Which type of Tyvek? Can you download new maps?

Download from the internet, place maps onto a USB memory stick & take it into the store...not sure about double sided printing, you'll have to ask or give them a ring.

Hi, this looked like such a great solution to wet or ripped maps, so I had a go. Taipan is certainly right. They print well and seem pretty tough, yet to try in the bush. The tyvek is a bit thicker than paper and doesn't fold up as well but that isn't much of a problem. A great outcome. Cost $21.25 for print and $2 for the map download.

Been printing on tyvel for kayaking maps for a year now.

Biggest issue is that the print rubs off when you fold them too much.

It's not a perfect solution but the best at the current price.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.
