Need to start a new thread with 'best equipped' as well. I could not believe this German guy I ran into in New Zealand who pulled out a portable cooker you would normally use for car camping, a large kitchen cooking pot and a full sized colander.

Not uncommon. I've seen them try to go down from the lookout to Wineglass Bay in strappy high-heel sandals.

quite possible these people are just doing training hikes in preparation for longer, more remote walks.

Certainly didn’t seem that way when we had a chat. On the other hand they probably laughed at my small pack when I left...

While climbing Hill 4 leaving pigsty ponds one morning the cloud rolled in and I could hear a Saxophone jamming away somewhere in the mist...Prepared for a good time!

But perhaps the most common form of being unprepared, which I see all the time is walkers going the opposite direction asking "how far is it?".....well how far is what? One of the most important things is to have studied your route... Was asked this most recently near Lake Newdagate in late afternoon during midwinter. They were heading out with small daypacks.... I made sure they had head torches.

Was asked the same thing near the Farmhouse Creek crossing while returning from Fed. It was late afternoon again and they asked how far to Judd's Cavern, Informed them that the track was realigned over 2 decades ago and no longer went that way.....Their map was from the 1980's..... they also asked if the track got any "better" - had bad news for them on that front They looked well prepared, But obviously not for the track conditions or route specifics

I think the most gobsmacking lack of preparation I met was a father and preteen son setting out from Macalisters Springs to reach Mt Speculation that night.
And they were leaving at lunch time.
With day packs.
And the guys wife was going to drive to Mt Speculation to pick them up.

I offered to drive them back to Licola or call and leave a message but I think they hitched out with another group in the end.

Wow! Mac Springs to Spec in a day is not hard, but not leaving around noon, no leeway. It's not that hard to get from the Mac Springs carpark to Spec by car, maybe 200-250 kilometres. However, it's slow with perhaps 75% on winding mountain roads. It may take four hours to drive, and what if the Spec road is closed?

Heard of a a bloke walking the whole Bib in thongs. Nil issues, very experienced bushman from what i hear.
Ill equipped? Its all relative....

Who said he was ill equipped? If it works it works. Providing it did happen. Let's see a pic. My four plug dress thongs are pretty tough.

Hahaha I wish I had the oppertunity for a photo! But unfortunately I only heard about him.
Agreed if it works it works. Dont always need all the gucci gear.

Cliff Young used gumboots ....

...and Dot Butler did it barefoot.

I found several unopened and thawed out frozen peas, carrots and bean packets about half a kilo each before Federation Hut in April last year. I still dont know what was going on there.
