The army has large 4WD fire trucks with 6000l (apparently with all the gear and well trained enlisted crews).... and they are now using them.

{EDIT!}
Wrong .. they are Air Force ...

Trucks need ground access. Aerial water-bombing is the only way to get at a lot of vulnerable places.

I'd like to see more real-time management using all of tools available. I think there needs to be more discussion on the use of containment lines, like the discussion we are now having on the merits of hazard reduction.

Some fire crews are too quick to get the dozers out to build/rebuild containment lines in the hope that the conditions will be right by the time the fire reaches the line. This isn't often the case - there is a lot of luck/hope/prayers with containment lines - the conditions need to be right.

Thoughts and prayers for widened containment lines:

Some saw a very bad fire season coming.
Most (population) are oblivious to nature and weather beyond their immediate life/style.

Good to see some army action, they gotta train somewhere to keep skills and fitness up. Might as well be camped out bush, shoot ferrals, pluck some weeds etc.

Now there's the possibility of floods. Note how the severe flood warning stops at the borders. It would be nice if the fire maps (RFS, CFA, whatever) went over borders.

"State Responsibility" means things stop at state borders, get rid of states governments and we'd save 10's of millions of $.

Ha. Just figured out today why my Nat Parks car sticker is good for all of NSW except Kosci... because that park crosses two states so it has a different administration.

KNP is a NSW park, nothing to do with Vic. There is a group of parks in NSW and Vic which go under the banner Australian Alps National Parks. It costs three times more for the NSW All Parks pass which includes knp compared to the Multi Parks pass which excludes knp. The difference is due to the cost of services during the ski season.

Very few "National Parks" are 'National'. Most are state/territory responsibilities not federal.

I don't think there are any "National Parks" that cross state/territory boundaries anywhere in this country?

KNP certainly does not cross the state boundary.
As pointed out above KNP has the ski season - so they charge extra.. not certain if that is really justified.

NSW NPWS All Parks pass is a skier surcharge because families who want to introduce their children to the snow are all banking execs from Sydney's Eastern suburbs who think their kid is the next World champ. Maybe not but that's the thought process.

Away from the resorts you can stealth it. No promises but park at the resorts and expected to get nailed.

When I think of all the taxes I pay, NSW NPWS All Parks isn't that big a deal.

Thanks, feeling dumb about my lack of NP geography aware ess now. Zoomed in an noted the state borders, ACT side becomes Namadgi. Hope to handle real maps for the wider areas some day.

Followed the Murray River from east to west on Google, it is soooo long!
