When walking with the otherhalf and starting to feel the incessant chatter is a distration from that solo, remote bush feel you are used to...start and argument, let it simmer to just under boiling point until she administer the silent treatment. Enjoy the serenity. When walk is over, praise with compliments of the achievment and just how impressed you are of her bush abilities, fitness etc...

But be warned: This is not a suitable undertaking for amatuers! things can go South VERY quickly, it's a fine line you walk frought with peril and if not handled correctly it could result in a back-track to the car and a miserable weekend all round. Good Luck.

Puredingo, I have done some things in the bush that (in retrospect) were dangerous, but I've never attempted anything quite THAT dangerous.

But yes, after you become comfortable with solo walking in the wilderness, group walking never feels quite the same again.

Never have a Clif bar more than three hours before the end of the days walking.

It's no use taking the tripod when you have the wrong quick-release plate on your camera.

I was wondering that too...

One thing I've learnt is to never have a Clif bar.

All I know is, three days running, I had one at midday and at three pm I crashed. It's like they have speed in them or something like that - there's a definite boost that hits pretty quickly but when it wears off it leaves you totally drained. Next two days, no bar, working just as hard, no crash. I don't think they're for me.

This shall now be my default position. Once I've finished off what I bought while they were on special. Who was that so-and-so who told us about them being on sale at Woolies?

Me.
I think I have tried them before. They were ok for me, just a bit pricy. I think they are better than 'power bars' .. much better taste and look like real ingredients rather than a chemical concoction.
Mars and snickers are on special at the moment too... think I prefer the clif bars to them .. too much sugar?

Real ingredients? Clif bars are pretty much like most energy bars in that they are predominantly made from simple sugars.

I wonder why Clif bars in particular cause NNW to have sugar crashes?

I personally don't get sugar crashes. I avoid Clif bars because I find them inedible. I think they're supposed to be cookie-like but if so they're the world's worst cookies ever. To me they mostly resemble dog biscuits. I'd have to be starving to eat one again.

If you want simple carbs there are many other choices. But energy bars do have the advantage of simplicity. They're packaged nicely, they're appropriately sized, they reasonably balanced nutritionally for their purpose, and they have a good shelf life.

Never having eaten dog biscuits, I can't make a direct comparison, but there is something cardboardy about the taste, even when overlaid with mint. Eatable, but not particularly palatable.

Well power bars look to have moved on from when I tried them last..
https://www.powerbar.com/shop-now/
Think what I tried were 'Performance Energy'
Ummm ... not for me. You can try them if you like .. some bicycle shops have them.

Yeah, it's all what you find palatable. I've mostly moved away from energy bars after getting tired of a number of different ones. All of those that I used to eat make me gag to think about now; I just burned out on each of them, usually after 1-3 years.

Oddly, the original Power Bars, what they now call "performance energy", I can still tolerate. They're basically a form of really bad taffy but for whatever reason I can choke them down, a full 17 years after I first tried one. I don't know why I haven't gotten sick of those like all of the others.

Advice from a guy I met on the GR11 who was carrying a far lighter load than me. Probably 5 kg to my 18 kg. "There's nothing lighter than money".

Heysen Trail maps are almost useless for peakbagging.

Actually, those last two words are redundant . . .

Do not be stingy with painkillers in your first aid. Rationing painkillers in the middle of an hard offtrack walk after tearing your groin muscle is not fun.
Tablets aren't heavy.

Alternately, don't hurt yourself.

There is no such thing as "normal feet". If Eric Blair had been a bushwalker, he would probably have written that "...all feet are different, but some feet are more different than others."
