Aussie bushwalking books

Postby Robbo » Fri 13 Jun, 2008 9:13 pm

Hello All

I've only recently joined the list and am sure this topic will have been covered in the past, but here goes. Does anyone know the titles of any books that have been published that could be termed a handbook for bushwalking in the Australian bush? I am a teacher and am in the process of gathering resources for preparing our kids for walking in some of the mountain areas of Victoria and Tasmania, and any feedback will be of use.

Thanks in advance,

Tony Robinson

G'day Robbo,
Lex Lannoys' 'The Australian Bushcraft Handbook " may be of some use even though it may be a tad out of date I cannot find my copy but it was useful to me as a resource 20 years ago,I also suggest that you check out the latest Australian Scout handbooks.

There's also a discussion topic of bushwalking books in this topic, but there may not be any mentioned there that specifically meet your requirements.

Thanks for the tip, Nik

The books on this list are to do guiding rather than the kind I mentioned, but thanks for the thought,

G'day Robbo,
Just found my copy of Lannoys book (got a big library)and apart from outdated tents ,stoves etc all else is very relevant for your proposed instructional purposes and I will now reiterate it is a really good "handbook" as a matter of fact I will re read it just as a refresher and I can remember putting into practise the tips learned from it way back then ,yet they are so relevent today despite GPS ,EPIRB and Mobile/Sat Phone .
Good luck with your intent and if you would like one or two clues PM me they may be old fashioned but they did work with all of my charges over a period of 17 years.

Thanks for this. I will track one down. I came across a new text from WA the other day, that deals with this as well.
