How hard can this be to make? My calcs (based on three loops of 36.8cm diameter with a peak height of about 525mm and about 750mm wide) I need 3.5m of 3mm(?) fibreglass rod, a joiner, thread and some No-see-um netting. Any ideas where to source the fibreglass from?

Hmm i know your keen on self supporting, but a bivy like this you would almost always be under a tarp or shelter of some sort, so you should have something to hang it from. Even a nearby shrub could do the trick if needed to. It would save a lot of weight and fiddling with a self support mechanism. Just my 2c.
From experience though if you hang from.a single point you may find the sides sag a bit near near head, this is easily fixed.with a few tieouts though

Have you thought of modifying something like the S2S Nano Mosquito Net ?
I see it advertised for $40
A common complaint I have seen on those A16 nets is that bugs can still get in.
Possibly worse for the ones that toss and turn.

That's a nice net. The only thing that I really looking for ideas on is sourcing the 3.5m of 2mm(?) fibreglass rod. It was pretty impressive stuff - I thought it was a high tensile wire.
