Using repair tape for the first time

Postby Moondog55 » Sun 26 Jun, 2016 12:18 pm

Something that has always niggled at me with my big winter parka is the fact that to enable easy access to the Goretex the liner has a big overlapped gap in the shoulder area.
So today I finally opened the doubled sided adhesive tape I purchased from Simon at Tier Gear and tried to add some Velcro.

I need to do some more repairs to this parka a couple of the liner seams have opened up and the elastic in the hood has ripped out of the stitched edge.
I'm hard on my pants and parks and one of the reasons I've seen no particular advantage in using lightweight outer garments
Those ripped seams and stitching were probably caused by one of my many tumbles while skiing

After the tab was glued to the fabric I laid the complementary piece on top with the tape attached then removed the tape and with Ceciles help pressed the flap down hard

In my experience tape isn't enough to hold velcro down when you 'open' it. Will be interested to see how it goes for you.

Well the tape is holding it in the correct place, if I have to sew then I'll sew.
Strange to think that you can use this tape with Cuben but Velcro is stronger

The tape has high sheer strength but lower peel strength so the velcro may pull it off eventually.

I'll keep that in mind Simon and I'll be careful but this will see me thru the winter
I also had to replace the elastic in the hood so it needs to be able to be opened up
It does fit better with the velcro in place tho

Just use adhesive backed velcro. I applied some to the inside of a J&H Goretex jacket and it was still there 25 years later when the seam tapes had long since peeled off.

If I had had some I probably would have
Too late now

EDIT

I just found a self adhesive Velcro button and tried it
Does work better; I will remember that for the future
Thanks

Just glue it if you don't have velcro with built-in glue. If you stitch it you'll have to seal it anyway so might as well just skip the stitching step and use the glue.

Lining is separate to the shell in these parkas; but one thing i never thought about is that the glue isn't heat resistant and when the Goretex is washed and tumble dried it fails; so the SA dots are the way to go as that glue is heat resistant and permnanent
