Poncho liners query

Postby Moondog55 » Sat 03 Sep, 2016 3:51 pm

Has anybody here experimented with the American Army type LW liners?
They have just started to come up as Australian surplus and at reasonable prices on eBay.
I haven't put my hands on one yet but I will assume they are of the same middle of the range quality that the old field-coat and raincoat liners are made from.
Popular in the US for summer blankets and hammock underquilts.

I have an ADF liner and use it during the summer nights and as extra insulation. If I had one complaint about them it would be how 'slippery' they are, mine has a habit of migrating away without any input from me.

Got my hands on an Australian issue poncho liner to look at, What a piece of c**pola, no wonder people buy their own gear. Shell isn't windproof, no DWR and the insulation is quilted to within an inch of its life and its heavy 1050 grams for a lousy 4mm of insulation
Feller wants $35- but I'm not sure its worth even that

Don't know about the Aussie ones, but I have used US ones since I was a kid (my Dad brought one back from Vietnam which I used all through Scouts and Venturers).

Last weekend I took a pair of these with me on a very windy overnighter. I tied one in place under my hammock as a windblocker, with my summerweight 3/4 down underquilt inside it. I tied the second poncho liner over the top of the hammock and in my light 10 deg C synthetic bag I was snug as the proverbial bug.

I'll often take a US poncho liner with me to use as a sleeping bag liner during trips which are on the verge of needing a winter bag.

I reckon it's a great bit of gear, but that could be nostalgia talking ;-)

Woobies are one of the best pieces of gear you can get! Its made plenty of my nights much more enjoyable then they would have been otherwise and if you can snag one for a good price, I'd highly recommend it.

ADF poncho liners are very similar to US ones. Moondog55 I haven't weighed mine but would say its around the 800g mark. They are not for use anywhere but in tropics during summer months where you may have the odd need for insulation. When you do use it is remarkably warm for its looks and being a blanket, very useful

Standard and construction is so variable with issue gear due to lowest cost supplier. I am not surprised that this one is much heavier than that and not at all windproof but 200 grams makes a big difference

Finally dug it out moondog, 710 grams (including random anaconda stuffsack), 2m x 1.3m. Made by a company called Walkabout, 100% nylon, NSN 8465-66-136-4717, ADF issue (look for the arrow marking) and made in Australia. It has very little insulation and is quilted to the overkill.

On the Label "To be used as either a liner for sleeping bag in cold climates or a wrap around blanket in warm climates"
Though, I find it to be quite wind resistance when used as a hammock UQ (used in spring time in a sheltered spot minimal wind)

My initial thought was to sew on a hood and use it as a cape; for sitting around in; maybe when hunting, easy to adapt to a coat configuration with a buckle and some tape.
I don't think the military trust APEX yet but I agree far too much quilting for maximum efficiency
Same NSN but different maker.

Does anybody have any links to a downloadable hood pattern suitable for a poncho?
I've just gone thru all of my patterns and I don't seem to be able to find any hood patterns suitable
Just measured the one I picked up, it's 197 * 172cm
