Material for a sleeping bag liner

Postby Neo » Sat 28 Jan, 2017 4:34 pm

G'day any suggestions as to what fabric to use to make a sleeping bag liner?

I'm looking at not carrying a bag in summer conditions when the expected overnight temps are 10-15°C+, sometimes still in the high 20s. I carry leg thermals and could wear clothes and even shoes for an unexpected drop.

Seems the STS liners are not much chop. I would want a footbox and maybe ⅓ sewn up the side.

I do have a double silk liner that I could chop up but that seems a waste. Hoping for under 200g. Or maybe i dont need anything?

What do you sleep in? Tent? Hammock? Tarp?
Might not need anything in peak summer.

When I'm at the Murray in summer, I take a small cotton sheet to lay on my bedding, and then sleep in the minimals. I am in the process of making a traditional Australian sleeping bag thingy for my summer camping.
Other than that, I'd use silk.

Should add the double silk I have, I find it a bit tangly as is. Its 1.8x1.8m.

A protrail so enclosed, low but airy. I could make two from the silk I've got. Good idea on the under sheet, make a fitted cover for my short air mat so I don't stick.

What thread to use with silk?

Went with reducing the STS silk double by half. There was a central seam running down and back so cut 15mm beside that. Put it in mums deft hands on the overlocker with a polyester thread then made a foot box about 500mm up one side.

In a spare peg bag weighs in at 120g compared to the Palm 1 at 850g.
