Weird Tipi tunnel clone idea

Postby Moondog55 » Sun 25 Jun, 2017 12:51 pm

I have here a home assembled hubbed gothic arch pole set.

I bought a tent pole set on a clearance when Rays shut down the Nth Geelong store; separated the component pieces and re-assembled as a single large pole set using a 9mm 145 degree Easton joiner.

I had this idea of reinforcing the cheap Coleman tent but I have abandoned that idea.

I now have this idea of using it as the centre pole in a tipi style tent but realise it isn’t strong enough/rigid enough to do so.

Also I cannot seee how to use a hubbed set in any way other than internally, how would you feed the hub though a sleeve externally>??

So I had this visual of a tent something like a Eureka Timberline pop into my skull using an additional 2 sets of poles with arch connectors to give me a tall but skinny tunnel tent sleeping along the long axis. I need to stand up to dress these days due to the severe arthritis in the hips and the corrective surgery waiting list is a few years long still.

Thoughts/ Crtitique?

I wish I could draw so I could put down on paper the picture in my head, but basically 3 gothic arches with 500 to 600mm separating them and about 2100 tall; 2400 long internally and only 1200mm or so wide with big tall vestibules on each side, the triangular hubbed ends a triangle about 900 on a side

No point in tossing out what may be a good idea
Vango do a good Gothic arch tent, i'm thinking something wider and talller and not as long, so you would sleep across it rather than along the axis

I like their tent designs but the British must be short.

I've no idea of the history but guessing native Americans successfully used the tipi shape in snow conditions.
Maybe size-up to get the room, especially if you are going to lug it in once on a sled.

Stop the pole sleeves below the peak and put a cap over the hub at the top - a bit like Hilleberg's Soulo. (Although that doesn't use a hub and is a dome, the same sort of idea should work with your arch.)

NNW the hubs are at the bottoms of the arch, so what I have it a gothic arch sitting on a pair of gothic arches

Ahhhh, like that. OK, sleeves are not going to work without a lot of mucking about and fancy sewing. Can be done but not simply.
