Cuben fiber daypack

Postby Huay » Tue 25 Jul, 2017 6:37 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new here.
Just wanted to share the pack I just finished.
Before this, I had never touched cuben fiber and never touched a sewing machine, so I pretty munched jumped straight in the deep end.

It's made from 1.0oz cuben fiber.
It's actually easy to work with because it stays when you fold it, and you can just stick it in place with the double sided tape.
So, pretty much, it is a copy of a hyperlite stuff pack, but I added side compression straps.

THE LIST.
One and a half yards of one ounce cuben fiber.(I think I only used a bit less than a yard)
One meter of 13mm grosgrain.
One meter of 20mm grosgrain.
Two 13mm side release buckles.
Two 20mm ladderlock adjusters.
Five yards of double sided cuben tape.
Time.
Patience.
Coffee.

I probably spent around $100-120 on this. (About $100 cheaper than the HMG stuff pack I was looking at)

You can't cut this stuff with scissors, you'll need a fresh razor blade, even after about six cuts the blade was pretty dull.
Not sure how much it weights, I think around the 100-150g mark. But I added foam in the straps to stop the cuben bunching up on my shoulders.
It's almost completely waterproof and the Main body it taped not sewn.
I will add patches over the sewn parts to make it more waterproof.

It feels solid and turned out pretty much what I had in mind.
If you have any questions about working with cuben or about my pack design or in general, please ask!

Trying to post photos but it isn't really working.(IPhone)

Well done.

I've previously made dry bags with cuben that's just be glued, and the seams have failed under pressure.

They need to be sewn with large stitches, and then sealed with tape to maintain strength.

Did similar project a while ago.

Haven't used it much yet, but might upgrade bits for winter ski touring day pack.

It's great fabric to work with.
