Shiny side or dull side?

Postby Orion » Fri 11 Aug, 2017 9:46 am

I've got some breathable fabric that has a right side (dull) and a wrong side (shiny). The wrong side has been "calendered" to make it more water resistant and more downproof.

My understanding is that normally the wrong side goes on the inside of what you're sewing. If I were making a quilt the wrong side would be inside the quilt and the right side would be on the outside of the quilt (or against my skin).

But suppose you're making a wind jacket instead. Would the same rule apply or would it make more sense to have the wrong/shiny/calendered side facing out?

Looking at the Uniqlo down vest I'm wearing right now, it has the dull side on the outside, and the shiny side on the inside. Which doesn't really make much sense in terms of downproofing....

For a windshirt I don't think there will be much noticeable difference. I would just go with what looks better.

Shiny side is the finished side, shiny side inside to protect the finish so it doesn't wear. I just came back from Lincraft with 10 metres of windproof fabric which was on sale at $2- a metre and the finishing is very apparent, on some fabrics it isn't
