Removeable triplex liner

Postby Zzoe » Fri 16 Feb, 2018 5:51 pm

Hi All

We're doing quite a bit of hiking this winter and in preparation I'm trying to solve the issue of occassional condensation inside our very beloved ZPacks triplex tent.

I found this, which is available for the duplex, and looks perfect:

http://www.zpacks.com/accessories/doubl ... sert.shtml

I wrote to ZPacks to see if they make such a thing for the triplex, which they don't as it's too niche an item. However, they did say that it was a very easy thing to make at home, which I'm very prepared to do. I don't have any problem sourcing the toggles and loops, but I'm looking for suggestions on the best fabric, which ZPacks no longer sell by the meter.

This is how it was described when they did sell it:

.70 oz/sqyd Ventum Ripstop Nylon
This super light, high quality 10 denier fabric is manufactured in Japan. The finished weight of the fabric is .70 oz/sqyd (23.7 g/m²) .

Any suggestions on where I might buy this, or a suitable alternative?

Many thanks in advance,

Zoe

Thanks so much, Simon... I had a look and I think that will be perfect. I'll pith the tent to work out best measurements. Be in touch soon.

Hi Zoe.
If you could use a bit more material to play with I have a condensation liner out if a Henry Shires Double Rainbow tarptent that I'd like someone to find a use for. Happy to send it to you for cost of postage.
Cheers JoanneImage

Hi Joanne

Wow... thank you so much for such a kind offer! I'm very curious about the type of fabric that it is; but I think the fabric Simon from TierGear suggested will be very similar. I have yet to get the tent pitched and take all the measurements (this weekend... this weekend... this weekend!), and order the fabric. So I won't deprive someone who actually has a Double Rainbow from one day getting their paws on yours. But I'm curious to know what your experience has been of the liner, and why you're not hanging on to it? Perhaps there are some issues that I can seek to avoid when I make my own?

Thanks so much again for the kind offer...

Hi Zoe.

I offered the liner up on here to DR tent owners a while back and had no takers.

I have never needed it or indeed even used it. Condensation has never been an issue for me. I am careful about pitch and siting of my tent to help avoid the issue, but thankfully it's never been a problem. Interestingly, when I pull my tent down it's usually the vestibule sides (which are the only part of the tent that have a double wall) that are damp.

If I could think of something useful to sew the liner into I would!

Anyway offer still stands. I feel loathe just to throw it out.

Cheers Joanne

Interesting to know, Joanne. It must be said that our Triplex condensation has only happened in low lying sites, and only on still winter nights... but with two kids inside (both of whom sleep like starfish) it's very easy for them to wipe a sleeping bag right along the roof (how they contort their bodies into these shapes and forms I'll never know or understand). Anyway, many thanks again for the offer.

Hi Moondog,

280cm long, 35cm wide in the middle at the peak, 110cm wide at the two ends. Thats give or take a couple of cm as it was a bit crumpled when I measured it.

I can recommend the Argon 67 from Tier Gear. It is what I used for this exact purpose and I found Simon at Tier Gear very helpful. This fabric was the perfect width off the roll.

I have added a PDF that describes the inner that I made. Perhaps it will help you. I am very happy with how it turned out. It has certainly kept us drier.
I also have a more detailed description that I am happy to send if you PM me.

Another mod that I made to the Triplex was to attach extra Line Locs to attach long side guy ropes to the apex. These markedly improve the stability against a cross wind. Let me know if you would like me to post a photo of this.

Wow, Mobius. Wow!!

I've only just found this post (I haven't visited the site for a few days), and am blown apart by your detail and documentation. What an incredible and generous resource. Thankyou so much- in advance from all triplex owners, too, I'm sure :).

I haven't had a chance to read through really properly, but will get to it this afternoon with a fine toothed comb.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou.

So did you make it? I'm interested in how much weight it adds?

I was thinking about one secured at 6 points with a string from pole to pole across ceiling to hold it high
