Where to buy material & fittings now?

Postby Nerdtrails » Tue 17 Jul, 2018 11:38 am

Now that Tier Gear has removed their DIY section (fabric etc) to focus on their manufacturing of complete products are there any good recommended sellers in Australia for MYOG supplies or do we need to order from overseas?
If we are stuck with overseas suppliers who would you recommend?

I've just been on a little MYOG ordering binge after watching too many youtube videos.

https://dutchwaregear.com/
Easy to navigate, fast standard shipping (I'm sure it was here in less than a week) and shipping was about $35 on a 1.1kg order. They wouldn't ship insulation like climashield but will ship a pillow kit which contains half a yard of climashield ;) I got some extra wide silpoly fabric which should be interesting to test.

https://www.extremtextil.de/en/
Has a large range of good fabrics (including interesting bits like TPU coated fabrics for packrafts etc), shipping was about 8 Euros for a few metres of fabric alone.

https://ripstopbytheroll.com/
Probably the most commonly recommended, but I haven't ordered with them.

https://www.diypackraft.com/
Only place I found that sells inflation valves for a reasonable price, but obviously specific to packraft materials. $11 shipping on a $30 order.

Edit: aliexpress.com has an awesome range of miscellaneous buckles, tent parts, poles, pegs etc. So far most stuff I've ordered has been excellent quality and a fraction of the price elsewhere. I still don't know if I'd recommend it for mission critical stuff, but well worth a look. Sometimes it takes a lot of searching to find what you want.

Thanks for taking the time to writing about your experiences with those suppliers.
Along with a few projects already on the book I am going to have to seriously consider a DIY Packraft now thanks to one of your links!

RSBTR may be the leaders in UL gear.
OWFINC is also worth checking on.
Both USA.

Cheers

I'll echo what Roger said, particularly with respect to RSBTR. They're an excellent resource and they will ship to Australia.

For tent poles and various other doo-dads (they carry fabrics too) Quest Outfitters is good. Again, a U.S. place that will ship overseas.

Tier Gear have DIY supplies again.

The service is excellent, as it was before.

I have just bought fabric and hardware for a tent inner and a quilt.

The "cheap" grey fabric is very good value for money.

Just started my adventure in MYOG, starting off with some clothes.
I purchased some cheap taslan-like ripstop off Aliexpress, I can let you all know how it turns out if anyone's interested!
