Using a Green Pepper pattern for inspiration. Not quite right yet so I'll me making another prototype soon
2 layers of wool/polyester gabardine for the outer so that it is both reasonable stiff and wind resistant to a high degree, then 2 layers of the Thinsulate we have so much of and lined with cheap polarfleece, very warm.
Sized to go over a thick balaclava so it looks oversized in the pictures, it isn't quite right.
The next one will have deeper ear pieces
Cecile did the joining on her new overlocker for me and I hand stitched the crown to the sides using a leather needle to punch though all the layers.

Very nice job! Looks great!.

My tips for your second prototype
Having a bit of experience with Canadian winters I can recommend connecting the "ears' to form a chin strap. When its ultra cold it keeps your ears and face snug. Also a longer fury neck at the back helps keep the drafts at bay.

Really you cant go past the classic trapper hat design. It really works in cold enviroments. Plus its great to wear around town.. where doning a balaclava can cause consternation in some quarters.

I had thought about simply buying a Mad Bomber when I got there
Also thought about this one as an adjunct

Partly I was looking to use up all this fabric
I'll look for a trapper hat pattern now
